I made the switch to an SSD. Now the question arises, I have Diskeeper 2011 Pro and it says that I should use Hyperfast SSD optimization to extend the life of my drive.

Is this true? I was under the impression you should not defrag SSD drives, so you can prolong the life from the erase-write cycles which decay the drives use.

However, Diskeeper says that this optimization process increases SSD Longevity.

I wouldn't bother, just make sure TRIM is enabled in Windows (it will be if you installed Windows on an SSD) and call it a day.

Someone posting to a forum claiming to be a Diskeeper employee posted a bunch of platitudes about their product with no actual technical details which sets my bullshit alarms ringing:

Another post on the Corsair forums, which turns out to originate from within Diskeeper's IP, with more snake-oil style bullshit.

And here's the official Hyperfast page:

Again, I feel like I'm wading through bullshit claims being put forth by used-car salesmen who switched careers to the tech industry. I wouldn't use this stuff.

I originally installed on my seagate IDE AHCI 1.5 drive how would I be able to veirfy TRIM and check alignment? thanks for the help! for now I wont use diskeeper since I dont want to mess up the new expensive drive

how would I be able to veirfy TRIM and check alignment?

To verify that Windows 7 is issuing TRIM commands:

Open the Start Menu, type CMD
Right click the icon and Run as Administrator
Type fsutil behavior query disabledeletenotify
DisableDeleteNotify = 1 (Windows TRIM commands are disabled)
DisableDeleteNotify = 0 (Windows TRIM commands are enabled)

Windows 8 should be the same. XP doesn't do TRIM, I think. Not sure about Vista. This only verifies that Windows is issuing the command; there's no way to know that the SSD is actually performing them, but it should be.

To check alignment:

Just download AS SSD and run it. In the top left there will be either a number that is green and says OK, or a red number that says BAD. Example pictures of good and bad. If it's bad, there's more info here on what to do about it, but don't try any of them without backing up the drive first.
