Question on Dell U2410 Calibration

Hello. Few questions:

I am considering ordering a Dell U2410 (A02).

Many people here talk about how it would be better to calibrate this monitor, however I don't have a calibration kit and I am not going to spend a few hundred to buy one.

I currently own a Dell 2407, which I absolutly love, and it is pretty much sitting on factory defaults for 4 years with no issues.

  1. Do you think an uncalibrated Dell U2410 will be fine considering I am happy with the Dell 2407?

  2. 2. I am going to assume that there are sites out there where people have posted calibrations that I could use to get better PQ out of it, even if it isn't exact to my version?

Thanks!

If you plan to use the sRGB mode it comes calibrated from the factory. I'm sure you could get it better but it should be pretty accurate out of the box. I would think that since you are happy with the 2407 then you would most likely be happy with the factory calibration of the 2410. Just my thoughts.

Yes.

Other peoples calibrations are a complete waste of time.. Moreso in the case of the U2410 since it already comes with a factory calibrated sRGB mode anyway. Not only will other peoples generated results not match your screen, most people don't bother to take the care required and so you often introduce things like quite visible banding in the process. In short - if you want to adjust things use the custom mode or go into test mode and carefully adjust the RGB that way. Don't bother with others profiles.

Calibrating is for matching different devices. If you aren't producing content for someone else, or printing, then (although some will say you should strive to see what the original content creator did) the most important thing is actually what looks good to your own eyes.

Dell don't give a way for end users to access the internal LUT in order to calibrate the U2410 anyway, so you can't actually calibrate the screen as nicely as the provided Adobe/sRGB modes, and the other provided modes have "strange" gamma curves (more details are posted by several users in the main U2410 thread), meaning its difficult to calibrate the U2410 using them.

The U2410's rather wide gamut appears to magnify the issues LG have in manufacturing colour uniform IPS panels though, so that's the main thing to be aware of when buying a U2410. However, unless extremely mild, that's nothing calibrating will fix anyway, and how uniform your screen is appears to be down to random luck of the draw.
