silly question as usual
lets say the price between the Core 2 Quad and Xeon Quad are the same
like Q6600 and X3220 both at $250CAD
and Q9300 and X3320 both at $300CAD
and i would probably OC it to 3.0GHz max
which side would u pick? the Core2 or Xeon?
the only difference i see between these pair is 65nm and 45nm...
which means the only difference ( to me at least ) is the heat ( probably noise level as well )
i know it might sound stupid to go for the 45nm over 65nm because it would run "cooler" but have to pay the extra 50... but i guess every little bit counts when it is inside a mATX case

It doesn't sound stupid at all to get the 45nm part, if it's worth $50 to you for the reduced vcore (thus heat). If the box is doing media stuff SSE4.1 might come in handy down the road.

The 45nm chips are generally better than their 65nm counterparts, although the lower-end ones like the Q9300 have low multipliers which make them difficult to overclock with. If that isn't a concern for you though, I would say go with a 45nm chip.

As for Core 2 versus Xeon, there's no difference between the LGA775 Xeons and their comparable Core 2 CPUs. They will perform the same as the Core 2 CPUs with the same specs.

Speed wise of the two is not what you need to think about but rather what you need for each, xeon mobos are not the same as your everyday desktop board. And for the most part don't lend them selves very well to gaming etc. (other than maybe Skulltrail). They are meant for the server/workstation world, it also means using FBDIMM RAM, which runs 2-3 times the price of your normal DDR2, the mobo are also much more expensive. So it's not just the CPU and price you need to look at, but all the hardware needed to run it. So stick with the C2Q.

*EDIT*

Oops, I see now that you are asking about the 775 socket Xeon's and not "true" 771 Xeon's. But in any case, stick with the C2Q's.

mATX? definently get the 45nm. Theres a little power savings for the electric bill, and its gonna clock higher if you have the mobo for it.

what eactly is SSE4.1? and does both Core 2 and Xeon 775 both have it?

and thanks for other people's input! 45nm it is! just picking which one right now ;)

SSE4.1 is an instruction set that basically speeds up programs that support it. It's a nice feature to have, although it doesn't make a difference in most cases.

The 45nm Xeons and Core 2s all have SSE4.1, since the Xeons are literally the same chips as the Core 2s except with different names (when considering the LGA775 Xeons, that is).

so i guess it doesnt really matter if i pick the Q9300 or X3320 then right?

execpt the HSF! itz shorter on the 775 Xeon! lol
and the so called cheery picked one with a slightly higher heat tolerance lol
since they are the same price... i have a i get a Xeon sticker instead of a C2Q which i already have one? lol i dunno i m just weird in some way for this so called project rig lol
