I have a dead Micro-ATX power supply that I tyook out of a friends HP tower. I checked to make sure that the componenes are still operational, and everything works fine.

My question is who makes a decent Micro-ATX PSU? I was hoping Antec made them, which they did not.

Lastly, the PSU I have features PFC. Should I be worried about looking for a PSU that has this feature built into it? From what I understand, it is only important in Europe.

Thanks in advance.

Ugh, looks like there is a whole can of worms here.

I was using my spare 600Watt PSU, and I noticed the system got slower, and slower, and slower. So, I decided to reboot it, and to its delight it decided to give me the good old boot.ini error. Ok, so Ill just repair XP. WRONG, someone set an admin password on the damn thing so I couldnt do that.
Next option, give it a fresh install (seeing there was no important info on it). So, all was going good up until the format, then it got to 14%, and decided it wouldnt move for an entire error.
Hard drive failure was the first thing that came to my mind. So, I decided to take it out to see who made it, Seagate. When I went to take it out it was EXTREMELY hot for a hard drive. So, I ran SeaTools on it, and all of the tests passed. Looks like this thing is a few RPM's from biting the dust. Looks like repair on this PC is not worth it. I know the person who owns this PC has a Dell on order, so I am not going to worry about it.

Oh, and one more thing that I found very strange. Last night we had very strong winds. About 2:00am, my UPS went off (power failure). It just so happens that the computer that I was working on was on a UPS as well. Im not sure if the power failure had any play on it or what, but I just found this strange seeing the PSU was working fine until our power went out.
OH, and I just remebered something. Two nights ago, I was coming home to find this erie blue/grey glow in the sky. It turns out a power transformer was exploding (thats cool if you ever get to witness it(Totally off topic but check this stuff out (http://205.243.100.155/frames/longarc.htm), transformer arcing...crazy stuff)). I was told there was like a 10 second brownout before the power went out.
I still cant see how this would make any difference, seeing the UPS should have protected the PC against any of these problems.

Anywho, thanks for the recommendations Spectre. Maybe they will become useful in the future!

Sorry to hear the system is pretty much a wipe. Good luck and no problem.

Going to give a low level format a try. Sometimes that wipes out stubborn errors.

EDIT: Looks like that worked. I formatted the 55GB Drive to 20GB (Ill use PM later to get the rest of the space out of it). So far it has successfully formatted the 20GB with a NTFS file system. I hope things will stay stable!

The computer is 100% working. The best part is its mine now :) The person who owned it ordered a Dell (a while back before this one broke), and it jsut came in. Anywho, I am still going ot repair it for home use. Its not a bad system (WXP Home, 1.3ghz Celeron, 20GB hdd...). Still didnt get that PSU yet. In fact I had another question. While I was on the egg, I came across Athena Power PSU's. THey have a few more connectors than the Forton ones do.

How are Athena PSU's in terms of quality? Personally I have never heard of Forton or Athena. If they suck I will just go with the Forton an mod another molex or two on it.
