Question: How to create a "sand" looking surface on a case?

Of course textured spray paint... but... I dont know if that would be good enough.
 
Well if you're really daring you could apply a sand like texture to the wet paint. You could use actual sand, or use glitter for texture etc, and then paining over it.
 
How about sand ?

Cover the area with an epoxy or some type of glue .. coat it with sand .. let is dry ..remove any loose sand, then go over it with a clear resin or enough clear coat.

Apply several light coats of primer and paint. After that dries, lay down a VERY THICK and wet layer of paint and immediatly toss sand across the paint to the amount desired. To seal the sand and give the finish a uniqe look, spray crystal clear enamel over the top

Wont the thick layer take forever to dry though?

Also, Ive never worked with bondo... can bondo be shaped and used as desired, or is it really just meant to fill in cracks?

Problem is, I need to seamlessly integrate a plastic base onto a case, using bondo, but still keep the raised sandy look.

Painting is patience grasshopper

Bondo can be shaped to nearly anything to a point but its really used for sealing in areas where it would be to difficult or impossible to seal with metal.
 
Well, my main question is... will the thick paint dry in 24 hours?

I need to pick up some bondo and mess with it...
 
how about getting a can of spray adhesive, spraying the appropriate areas of the case, dusting/sprinkling those areas with ACTUAL sand while the spray adhesive is still wet/tacky. after that dries, spray over the new surface with paint.

EDIT: sorry jesder didn't see notice that you said the exact same thing :p
 
1 word: Fleck Stone.

Krylon or one of those major spray paint makers makes it. I've seen it at Wal-Mart. It's a 2 step process. The undercoat which is the color, then an overcoat which is the "flecks". I suggest clearcoating it when you;re done, otherwise the shit just rubs right off pretty easily.

I did the entire dash of my show truck when I had it, and it looked like it was carved out of a block of granite when it was done.
