I just bought a Diamond 4870 512mb from Fry's for $185 AR and I am thinking of returning it. I have not installed it, but I don't know if 512mb is going to be enough to run the latest games well at 1920x1200 on a 24" monitor, especially in the future. What do yall think I should do? I am trying to stay within a budget, but I am not going to skimp on my video card. I guess I want to know what I should do about my video card. What is the biggest bang for my buck? Should i get a 4870 1gb or will 512mb be enough? Or, should I do 2x4850 in crossfire? Could someone please give me a rundown on what video card setup is going to serve me the best. I want to play all the latest games on my monitor and make them look good. I am also not set on ATI either. Thanks guys, I really need some good help and information to make my decision.

there are already some games where 512mb on the 4870 isnt enough at 1920 so theres your answer. how would 4850 in crossfire be any better if they arent 1gb models? get a 4870 1gb or GTX260 216sp. heck if money is not a big concern then go with a GTX280.

any more advice. Is the gtx260 core 216 better than the 4870 1gb? I guess I want to know what the best bang for my buck is going to be knowing i want to play the latest games at 1920x1200.

I would say that the GTX 260(216) does overall do better than a Radeon HD 4870 1gig due to Nvidia latest forceware 180 drivers. Plus, the GTX 260 (216) most times is cheaper than a Radeon HD 1gig. What is your budget anyways?

for the video card I want it to be close to $225. I mean if $275 is going to make a HUGE and ! mean HUGE difference I would be willing to go there. Thanks for helping me guys. I really do appreciate it.

which Video card is going to preform better in games? The GTX260 core 216 or the 4870 1gb?

this has been discussed a million times on here and at every single tech site on the web. they are about even with most sites giving the nudge to the GTX260 216SP with the newest drivers.

people need to stop the 180 driver advertise...

180 actually decrease some of the performance.....

plus, a 216 Core compare to the old version doesn't boost much performance beside OC does make differences...

with the ATI 8.12 beta driver, I do gain a impressive improvement over some games like Warhead (doesnt stutter that much anymore).....

if you really want to pick a card now, I suggest 4870 1G..

or if you do extreme overclock, I suggest GTX 260+ .....

The last Left 4 Dead review shows the GTX with a good 10 fps lead(which isn't really much, but still). Is that because of the new drivers, or is something going on with the Anti-Aliasing settings I'm not getting? I'm in the same boat as the OP. I'm about to upgrade and I'm trying to decide between a 4870 1gb and the XFX GTX 260 Black. I saw a review that was posted on the [H]ardware Round-Up that showed the XFX kicking some ass. I wonder if [H] has any plans for reviewing the same card.

if you are going for a single card solution, get a GTX 260 Black Edition if you have the buck..

If not, 4870 1GB then later for CF will always be a good thing to go with....

and if you have candy eye, ATI card will always fit you better...

about that Left 4 Dead review, I suggest not to read the entire review, because somehow me and my friends who own the 4800 series card turn out totally different story than they have..

such as the shadow issue, never have that problem at all, and shadow seem only glitch up when alt-tab out the game, but it only happen to static object, therefore if you keep walking through the game, the problem will be solve right away...
and I have the same problem with my 8800 GTX, it seem to be the game problem..

also the CF support is fix with 8.12 beta driver with FPS improvement...

Yea that's what I was thinking, thanks dude. Is microstuttering still an issue with SLi/CF?

I guess it depends on the games. I have a 4850 512MB at the same resolution and games like COD4 and Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway gives me no issues. Those are the recent games I play, so I can't comment on others.
