I am in charge of backing up large (50GB a week) amounts of data to DVD at my work. Up until now, we have been burning DVDs one at a time. Even with 4x burners and media, burning that much data to disk takes a long time. In addition, backup of the backups must be made for offsite storage.

Today, our director asked me to look into a server that could burn multiple unique DVDs at once (not, say 5 copies of the same data).

I'm having a heck of a hard time finding anything like that on Google. So, my question is, does such a product exist, if so, where can I get it.

If it doesn't exist, is this something I could build (money not an object).

What software would I need to run it in either case?

Thanks in Advance.

DiskJuggler can do that, I think. Never had to do multiple burns at once.

And for backups of the backups, look into a standalone dvd duplicator. You can either build your own with a controller + case + drives or get one already put together.
DVD duplicators

Are you doing DVD backups so you can have instant access to the backups?

Also, is 50gigs of new data, or are you just backing up the system regardless if some old data was backed up previously?

A high capacity tape drive would be more economical in the long run since you don't need an operator to keep swapping media or be present during the backup. It's just a large upfront investment in the hardware.

It is 50GB of new data every week.

The Directors like the DVD method we are using now so even though it is less economical, it isn't going anywhere.

I took a look at DISKJUGGLER but I don't think that this application will do what I want. It says it supports simultanious burning to multiple drives, but it doesn't say anything about burning unique jobs on each drive.

I have seen many DVD duplicators, but those won't work for me. They all are making several identical copies of one master.

What I am trying to find is:
-a tower with mulitple (4 or 5) DVD burners
-controlled by drag and drop style software like NERO
-burn a unique disc in each drive simultaniously

Does that exist?

You friggen rock.

I have been searching for over 5 hours and I have yet to find something like this.

Just out of curiosity, what was your search string?

Does anyone have any hardware suggestions?

I am open to the tower format that is specified above as well as an automated/robotic DVD production appliance (must be pc-attached and not stand alone).

Thanks

If it was me
Id at least consider waiting until dual layer DVD
is a litlle more established (double the storage per disc)
and build with a compatible controller \ drives

http://www.caloptic.com/index.html

might make the difference of half the media
(or time) in the long run

balanced against format adoption and standard longevity
at the very least, it will probably drive down the price of other drives

if opting for autoloading, Id closely question the provider about the upgrade path to other drives

That's a good idea except that our dvd jukeboxes aren't compatable with that new standard and, as far as I know, they are not upgradable.

www.powerfile.com
we have 4 c200's

Excellent advice Ice

Thank you everyone
