Question- Can this be done?

Can he put an SSD in that laptop? Yes.

Can you build a desktop that can play games better? Marginally. Most games don't really take that much power to play these days. Since most games are designed with 6+ year old consoles in mind, it doesn't take that powerful of a PC to play them decently. SLI 650m GPUs aren't too shabby either.

With that being said, a $1200 desktop could have more potential than that laptop for sure.
 
that is a very powerfull laptop for its price. Mobility or power, that is usually the difference between like systems. $1200 computer is actually quite a bit, but adding the extra components in such as monitors and such can throw this cost up to be "equivalent" However just the basic things, cpu-motherboard-gpu-power-ram-ssd-os-case-optical $1200 is a fair amount of wiggle room and can get some very decent parts, a buddy of mine is just building his, and skimping a bit as far as motherboard and such, he is just under $1k, add in the gpu ~$1280, still, laptops are hard to beat these days with the parts they use.

Alot of high spec games DO take advantage of powerfull hardware, however, far far to many are still console ports, its business, it will be nice to have computer hardware(or at least more similar) in next gen consoles, it might make it easier for devs and us to show the advantage of the hardware we have(or want to)
 
Can a PC that'll beat that Laptop be built for $1200? Probably. However, since your friend already bought the laptop, this discussion is a bit moot unless your friend is totally willing to return that laptop. If he's not, then really no point in discussing this any further.
