Question - audio through DVI?

HDMI is basically a single-link DVI, right (albeit often at higher speeds). So if we have DVI<->HDMI adapters, why can't graphics cards send audio through DVI to our HDTVs? Or support other HDMI streams?

Do any graphics cards already do this? Maybe the cards with both DVI and HDMI send audio stream on the DVI output?
 
Because DVI doesn't do audio. HDMI was designed so that the digital video part used the same electrical signaling as DVI for compatibility reasons. That does not mean the interfaces are 1:1 the same. HDMI can handle audio, DVI can't. DVI can handle analogue video (in the case of AVI-I and DVI-A variants), HDMI can't.
 
I know that ATI does audio through DVI through HDMI adapter...thats how I have my HTPC setup...I dont think Nvidia does though, could have changed however. I know my 4870 in my HTPC plays audio beautifully!
 
I know ATI cards 2000 series and newer support audio through DVI only with their HDMI adaptors. So I guess its physically possible, but I guarantee no receiving device with DVI is going to accept sound via DVI. It's just not incorperated into DVI standards, so you're not going to make it work like that, unfortunately.

I'm only talking about the digital portion. I believe those electrical interfaces are the same, hence the compatibility. It's simply a question of which streams are supported, and why.

A next question might be whether audio could be implemented at the driver level-- you're just adding a stream with binary data; the GPU doesn't need to process it in any other way.
