Total HardForum noob here, Long time lurker.

I have a windows home server, several TB of data, hundreds of movies, music, pictures, etc. I have room for 4 more drives (SATA limited) so I could have room for 8TB more of data. I'm not worried about running out of space.

Now the question: What are you guys storing? What percentage of what you have is Porn? movies, etc? How could you possibly have a need for 40, 50, 60 TB of storage?

I don't mean to be a troll or anything....

80's 90's Cartoons and TV Shows
Martial Arts Movies (lots and lots of old chineese kung fu).
I'm kinda lazy and dont like getting up to switch disc in and out so I rip all my stuff to my server so that I can just click and play.

At home I have tens of TB of mostly high def videos. My brother and I are very much into photography and videography.

720p is my reasonable limit, after we convert down it's about 1hour for 2gb.
NEF/RAW photos are big, but at least they are a magnitude more reasonable than video

At work we generate lots of data (relatively speaking... probably miniscule compared to LHC) from our POS services, we are in retail business with more than 100 spots.

Roughly 90% of all our data is porn. MF, MMF, MFF, and a little bit of MFFFF. :D

I think what you'll find as you download entire seasons of 720p tv shows that you'll need more and more space. An entire season may be 13GBs total but with a measly 10 seasons that adds up quick.

1080 shot from multiple angles used for witness prep. I also keep my iTunes and Amazon downloads all there so I can access from any PC or my iPad/ iPod Touch.

Oh... and backups.

Once you start storing media in HD (going from sd->mini-hd->720p->1080p) it adds up really fast. Plus a lot of people now just rip their Bluray's directly (instead of transcoding) so that's ~30GB/movie.

I am a semi-pro photographer. With 20mb+ per picture it goes fast. RAW files and photo-shopped files. I use 16gb CF cards which fill up fast when shooting a wedding for example.

And than my own collection of 80's music/video Yep, it's going faster every day haha.

I do a lot of tv recordings. I have two modified dishnetwork receivers that can capture the original video stream ("*.ts") directly to my pc, and I don't have time to transcode them to a more efficient file format (eg. mp4) to reduce file size, so it grows really fast.

I also ripped all my tv/movie DVD collections to ISO.

I loves photography. In my last trip, I shoot over 1TB of photo in less than 3 weeks.

We have about 50GB of business data. But several TB of backups and snapshots.

---

Our HTPC has 10TB+ of storage. Perhaps 5TB of DVDs that we have watched. (Some of the stuff we will never watch a second time). The other 5TB is used for recording OTA TV. We have enough empty space for a couple hundred hours of additional TV. We dump a lot of TV without watching it. There is not much reason to save it for the long term.

I figured out how to add 4TB of storage to the HTPC without much expense. I am testing that now.

Video media including tv shows, dvd rips, and bluray rips (main m2ts stripped down and remuxed into mkv) make up about 87% of what I store.

P.S. There are zero bytes of pr0n in my media collection.

OK, but how many bits of pr0n do you have? and what compression method are you using to keep the files so small? You can't hold out on us forever!!!
