Question About Windows SMP

Okay, I could/should research this, but since I have one of those new fangled full time jobs, it'll be much easier to just post the question and check back later. :p From what I understand, the SMP client pushes out far better PPD than two instances of normal F@H. I'm also under the assumption that Linux 64-bit and Windows are the only two platforms that current support this?

If this is the case, I was looking forward to kicking my main desktop rig over to the SMP client for Windows, since it's an Opteron 165 @ 2.8GHz with 2GB of memory. Since I work all the time, this thing's main task is crunching lots of units, as well as playing CS:S and checking email/forums when I have the time. So I got ready to switch over then I read this from Stanford's SMP FAQ:

http://folding.stanford.edu/FAQ-SMP.html
Notes for running

1. We strongly suggest people run this client on 4-core boxes. While it will run on 2-core boxes, we have noticed some potential problems (we are looking into these issues now).

Is this true or does SMP run fine (my first guess would be systems without much memory causing an issue). If SMP runs fine for my setup and will throw out more points, I plan to switch over ASAP. :) So some information on the topic from you guys would be helpful.

On a side note, I can't wait until they make a 32-bit Linux SMP client! :D

I think the question in the above post is does moose still sucks: answer is it depends on if moose little is behaving himself today.

SMP runs just fine on dual rigs.

:p

What kind of PPD increase does SMP yield over two instances of the standard client?

Marty is correct as always, I am running the SMP on the same system you posted and it works fine and dandy like marty likes his panizes! :D

A lot. Most of my consoles get stuck the 186 point WU's... you can about 600+ a day PPD on Windows SMP

Stole from FCF: Credit to zombie67. Not sure how you AMD fits into things, the SMP makes a boat load of points. 4x at least. Cross referance these with the WU values, or check KillerMOB listing here.

4X! Damn, I can't wait to switch over. :D

Is starting SMP for Windows as a service not recommended? I'm doing so and it doesn't see to be doing muhc....mpiexec.exe is floaing around 4,600k memory and 15-20% CPU, but I don't see any folding...

Yeah don't run it as a service.
It's still a beta, if you can't run it, it's okay just wait a few months and try again :)
