Question! About windows and programs being on separate drives

Planning a new build - right now I'm using a machine that I build 3 years ago, back when I was really "into" computers and more and bigger and louder was better. :D

the thing is absolutely huge and heavy and loud and hot - it still does everything i need it to do, and still quite well really (dual xeon 3.0, 2gb ram, 9800 pro) but i'm planning on getting a new 24 inch dell lcd (to replace this huge 21 inch sony trinitron crt) and i thought it would be nice to have a small and quiet rig to go with it for a change. ive got so much crap on this current rig that i paid for and never used, its ridiculous.

my current system is set up with 2 36gb SATA raptors (original raptor i believe). I have windows and nothing else on the C drive and any program I've ever installed I've put on the D drive. i dont think i had any research that indicated this would give me better performance... it just "seemed" like it would be better, so i did it.

so, my question is - as i'm planning my new system, i'm going for a minimalistic, yet fairly powerful approach. I'm planning on using an AMD 64 X2 (to take advantage of price drop when conroe comes out), 7900gt, 2GB ram - so a capable little system - not a budget rig by any means, but not super extravagant either. i'd like to use raptors again, so i ask you:

does putting all my programs on a separate raptor from my windows install give me significant performance gains? i'd assume it gives some gain, but if it is miniscule, i'll just stick with one drive.

i'd like to have just one drive in the system (i've got a file server set up on my network with plenty of bulk storage space), but i would happily put a second raptor in if i thought it would give me appreciable performance increases.

It likely helps a bit, but in my opinion not enough to justify the extra cost, heat, power, noise, etc.
 
performance difference isn't that great. If you are working with photoshop and hit the page file it can be a benefit to have to photoshop scratch disk on a different drive than the windows page file, but thats fairly specialized.

Biggest thing for me is lack of backup requirements for a format. I can reformat at any time without losing anything, and all it took is the tweakUI utility you can get from MS for free and adjust the special folders section.
