Question About Windows 7 Upgrade

I recently purchased the Windows 7 Pro upgrade for $30 from the Microsoft Student discount program. I read that if I install it over an installation of XP that the XP serial number will be sent to Microsoft and I won't be able to use that license again. Is there any way that I can pay a bit more to turn my upgrade license into a full version?

Your license will not be 'sent to Microsoft'. Legally you just can't use the XP license anymore since you 'upgraded' it to Windows 7. I also strongly recommend against upgrading over XP. It just does a clean install anyways but puts all the data behind your XP folders. Then when you delete XP, you have a huge hole at the beginning (fastest) part of your disk. Back up your data, then delete and recreate the partition during a "Custom" Windows 7 installation.
