question about weird problem w/o video

hope this is the right section; if not, i apologize

when installing a system from scratch, what can be the cause of no video (besides the agp card and/or ram not seated tightly - those are ruled out b/c i have tried 2 different video cards as well as reseating the ram and same problem);all the fans were running ; also, when i switch the power on from the front, it works but it wont reset; i' d have to use the switch from the back; and i follow the same connections from the manual; also, this is like the 3rd pc with the same case and motherboard asus p4p800se

the only thing i have changed in this motherboard is the cpu (i had a 2.8ghz northwood and changed it to 3.2 ghz prescott b/c i experienced freezings often lately so i am trying to figure out what the cause is; it's not ram b/c i have tried different ram, also diff. video card, also tried to install fresh os on a brand new sata drive (it froze while i was installing office); so the only 3 things i can think of left is cpu, motherboard, and psu; my psu is antec 550w true control; i dont think it's heat either b/c the temp shown by mbm5 has always been low 20'sC for the northwood)

Walk back through your steps one by one, and explain what you did...

This is what I understand so far...

Currently, you changed the CPU from a Northy 2.8 to a Prescott 3.2, both S478 of course on your p4p800se, which is an Intel 865 chipset.

Now you get no video, no matter what RAM or vid card you use.

Just going from that I would use my old CPU, and get the computer up and running, flash to the newest BIOS, to make sure that you have a BIOS that supports the Prescott CPUs.

ok, i put the 2.8 ghz northwood back to the asus board and it works (after reconfiguring everything in bios since i resetted the cmos earlier) but now i'm back to square 1 - the older system that freezes at least once a day

so what does this mean? the new cpu is no good? or what do i have to do to get the board to accept the prescott? i am pretty sure that i ran the asus update utility when i first installed this board

also, i have another system that has a 3.2ghz and with the exact same board model so i dont know what the issue lies :(

How old is the BIOS, you probablly want to flash the BIOS to the newest version.
 
ah ok; i just realized that i mistook the asus inf update util as the bios update utility; so i have never updated/flashed any bios before in my life until today

i just updated it from version 1007.003 (in 2004) to version 1008.015 with date 02/17/05

the other system that has a working 3.2 ghz prescott on the same mobo has bios version 1008.00.09

so do u think that i will be able to use the new prescott on this mobo? but i never flashed the bios on the other 3.2ghz system either and it worked; so i'm kinda confused and hesitant to take out the darn hsf again; it was a bitch to clamp it down successfully (zalman CNPS7700-ALCU)
 
ok, i put the 2.8 ghz northwood back in asus p4p800se with everything else still connected (except power of course) and it boots up like normal, except for the resetting of the bios

i put the 3.2 prescott in the ecs mobo 848p-a (i bought them together as combo) and hav the same deal; no display but all the fans run; the front button doesnt get resetted but works initially

i thought may be after a bios upgrade, that'd fix my original freezing problem but after almost a day, it froze again (while i'm not at the pc), so i'm stumped; dont know if that cpu is no good or something i'm missing???

please advise :(
