Question about VT-D and passthrough

I wanna build a ESXI box for study purposes / NAS

I played with a i3 that doesnt have VT-D, esxi is installed on one hdd
I have another 2TB that is set in IDE mode so I can access it through the operation system. One thing i notice, is that the hdd never goes idle.

If i had VT-d could i passthrough it so the operating system accesses it directly? that means going idle when it's not used and stuff?

What other advantages are when you have VT-D on a "remote" esxi (as in not my pc)
 
First of all, you cannot give it only the HDD. You need to passthrough the storage controller (more explicitly, a PCI/PCIe device).
If you do have a 2nd controller, then if you can boot with it, it should do what you want since the HDD will be natively controlled by the guest.

Now...I said "if you can boot with it" because I tried 2 controllers: some ASMedia that comes with Asrock Z68Extreme4 and a SiL3132 PCIe that I bought. The ASMedia would refuse to work, but at 1 point the SiL would show it's boot menu in the guest (but I don't remember why Windows refused to load from the emulated HDD). However, I did not continue my experiments.

Also, I have no idea how ESXi works. I used Xen with no frontend.
