question about voltages

ummm i m getting confused about voltage to the CPU
when u guys talk about the Vcore ( voltage to cpu, right? )
it usually mean the one we set in Bios right?
then what about the Core Voltage or Vcore that both CPU-Z and SpeedFan show?
which do is the correct one? or the one i should follow if someone give me a recommended voltage?

The Vcore set in the BIOS is indeed the CPU voltage. The Core Voltage or Vcore as reported by CPU-Z, Speedfan, or any other monitoring program is also the CPU voltage, however it is the actual voltage being supplied to the CPU, which always varies from the value set in the BIOS.

The "correct" one is closer to the value reported by monitoring programs, although keep in mind that no software monitoring app is actually accurate. You should gauge your voltage based on what CPU-Z reports and do not exceed ~1.38V Vcore for your CPU.

so my guess is that whatever voltage is being put into the BIOS = the max voltage is allow to go to the CPU? and CPU-Z would most likely ( since not always accurate ) show the actual voltage going to the CPU?
because apparently i think i m juicing my CPU too much for 3.2? i havent change any settings for NB/SB because no idea how much i should put... so far 1.275 Vcore in BIOS would give me a stable 3.2 prime95 for 2 hrs ( stopped at 2 hr because i think i could go lower on Vcore ) ... and cpu temp never go over 55C... and CPU-Z showing me 1.22 Vcore under load too
btw this is my first OC ever... so please feel free to correct me...
thanks

No. The BIOS setting is not a maximum, it's just the set number. However, because of the way the circuit is, a certain amount of voltage in the form of Vdroop is lost.

Nope, your voltages are perfectly fine.

so i guess i should be happy with the setting i have right now?
most of them are still on auto...
i m just trying changing stuff around so i can use lower voltage and lower temp of coz
btw what exactly is the stock voltage? i have been seeing ppl claiming they can run stock voltage on the Q9450 to get 3.2 but heck what is the stock voltage?

Stock voltage is the default voltage that the CPU operates at when it is set to its stock frequency.

then may i ask if anyone would know what is the stock voltage of the Q9450 ( 8 x 333MHz = 2.66GHz)?

currently raised the VNB to 1.2 and Vcore down to 1.2625 everything else kept at the lowest setting
so far temp havent reach over 54C and CPU-Z showing 1.19V-1.2V
quick BIOS setting

Ai Overclock Tuner = Manual
CPU Ration Setting = 8
FSB Frequency = 400
PCIE Frequency = 100
FSB Strap to North Bridge = Auto
DRAM Frequency = DDR2-800MHz
DRAM CLK Skew = Auto ( on all 4 )
DRAM Timing Control = Auto ( default = 5-5-5-15 )
DRAM Static Read Control = Auto
DRAM Read Training = Auto
MEM. OC Charger = Auto
Ai Clock Twister = Auto
Ai Transaction Booster = Auto

CPU Voltage = 1.2625
CPU GTL Voltage Reference(0/2) = Auto ( i wanna know how to set this as well )
CPU GTl Voltage Reference(1/3) = Auto ( i wanna know how to set this as well )
CPU PLL Voltage = 1.5
FSB Termination Voltage = Auto
DRAM Voltage = 1.8
NB Voltage = 1.2
NB GTL Reference = Auto
SB Voltage = 1.1
PCIE SATA Voltage = 1.5

is there anything else i can do to lower the the voltage and the temp?
Thanks

ah crap... fatal error at 40th min in prime95 on the core#3... argh... what should i do?

testing at 1.2680 Vcore... hope this work? and should even try VNB at 1.1?
and would instead of having thosr FSB setting all on auto... setting it at some number would give more stable OC? or possibly lower voltage/temp?

The best thing for you to do would be to look at the overclocking guide at the top of this forum. It will tell you pretty much all you'll need to know about overclocking.

i actually been reading that b4 i got my computer hahah
oh well i guess i will try harder tmr lol gonna play with Vcore and VNB i guess

btw.. if you want to find the stock voltage on your q9450.. default everything reboot run cpu-z and load up the cores with prime95 if you want.. should give you your stock voltage.. but if you dont want to do that.. do a q9450 search in the forums.. im sure you will find a thread with the stock voltage posted in there.. or they might have the number for you on an old review hardocp's done..
