hmm i'm kinda stumped on this...is the external data bus(EDB) simply the bus running 8 bits back and forth between the CPU and RAM or is it a gerneral name for all the busses?

Firstly, no modern personal computer uses an 8 bit data bus between cpu and ram(or more specifically, cpu, ram controller, and ram). Secondly, I've never heard of the term external data bus being applied to any one bus in particular. It is most likely just a generic term for a certain type of bus, most likely one that is not internal. :p It could mean any number of things depending on context and scope. If we are just talking about a processor, then the external data bus could be the bus connecting the processor to other components. If we are talking about a computer as a whole, the bus connecting the processor to other components might be considered an internal bus. Who knows. A data bus is a data bus. Without any specifics that is about all you can say.
