Question about swapping motherboards

I know 98 was rather forgiving but how is xp?

I want to swap out my asus a7n266-vm with an msi km4m-v and would like to know if I have to reinstall xp (a long assed process to reinstall it and all my software) or can I get away with just installing new drivers?
 
There is apparently some way to do, I think it is called sysprep or something like that. Honestly, if you are switching out mobos, you'd do good by reinstalling anyway. Shit sticks around and your system may start getting unstable, things just won't feel right. A clean install will keep your system fresh and stable. After you do a clean install, make an image so you don't have to reinstall completely... use Norton Ghost or something.

I've got a spare 40 gig kicking here so think I'll clone the drive first before trying this out.
 
By all means, try it, but take that advice with a grain of salt. There is still potential for registry entries sticking around to hassle you later. I actually go through the reformat and install routine once a year anyway, its healthy.

See how it works out for you for a while, it it works great for you, then voila, if not, back to the drawing board.
 
it depends on the chipset. If you go from an nforce2 to an nforce2 you should be fine, via KT333-KT333, you'll be fine. If you are going between different revisions of a chipset, aka nforce1 to nforce2 or KT333-KT666 or something, you might get away with it. KT333-nforce2 or something like that? Nope.

Been doing some reading and its going to have to be a fresh install as its two different chipsets <sigh> . . .

I usually reinstall o/s about every 3 or 4 months to keep things clean but had high hopes I could shortcut this but its just not possible.

I'd like to thank folks for the information and advice.
