question about spybot + AVG

Ok so yeah everyone knows about these programs. I don't rarely run them because my computer seems fine most of the time. However recently my computers been slow and I knew it could be spyware or a virus so I run these both of these

question is, should they be taking over 3 hours to complete? Wtf I remembered spybot was like 30 minutes max and it's been over 3 hours now. It's the same exact thing with AVG (been over 3 hrs and 38 mins)

this is my second run within 3 days and the first run took just as long

am I doing something wrong?
 
Some crap might be holding them from removing it. There's no way it should take 3 hours for spybot. Does the bottom bar move at all - count off the spyware its checking for?
Even avg should be faster - unless you have a HUGE amount of files to scan.

I would first try to run the scans from safe mode.
 
During the search spybot will say something like it can't remove a file and I just click ok and it resumes.

Yeah I look at the green bar and it moves but it's takes a while for a bar to show up, and it's out of like 16,000

AVG has the timer and it goes over 3 hours.. I mean this is just a shitty e machines computer so no way I have that much.. the hard drive is like 160gbs and I've filled up like maybe half

anything I can do?
 
Again, did you try the scans from safe mode?
You could always virus-scan it from another computer. I've scanned from a network location, installed the drive as a slave, and hooked drives up in an external enclosure to do scans - they all work. Most antivirus will also pick up the worst versions of malware.
 
Sometimes, it could be some of window's files have been corrupted. Reinstall is only way to fix them.

Easy.......go to Start, Run, and enter: SFC /scannow. System file check will verify the files. There's always repair install before a RE-install.
BUT
I am more inclined to believe a piece of malware is blocking the scans........which is why I recommended safe mode.
It would probably be a good idea to clear the temp folder out, as well as the internet cache before scanning.......check installed programs for anything out of the ordinary since alot of malware includes trojan downloaders - there might be installed programs you dont recognize, or are blatant adware tipping you off. Look at the running processes in the task manager - anything suspect should be Googled to see what it is.

CCleaner - Clean everything, fix registery...
Spybot SD - update em, scan, remove
A/V - Update, scan entire system

Repeat after rebooting - and repeat in safemode... You should be fine... If not, lol.
 
restart, and while it is booting, repeatedly press F8. A Menu will appear showing boot options.....Safe Mode, Safe mode with networking (Don't ever choose this if there is an active internet connection).....and others. Safe mode will not load any programs, start up, drivers, etc. You should be able to run your scans normally, although I have come across a couple of nastys that loaded even in safe mode (but this is not the norm).

CCleaner is a good free program to delete temp, cache, and other junk.

I would not use CCleaner, those reg cleaning programs usually cause more harm than good...sometimes, they will make the issue worse, preventing the pc from even booting...seen it happen many times. Cleaning the temp folders and cache is easily done manually.

Cleaning and Registry Cleaning are separated on CCleaner - that being said, if you don't want to use the registry cleaner of CCleaner, don't. But their "Clean up" does well for temp/caches, etc.

One program i'd replace Spybot with is MalwareBytes Anti Malware
it is the best free software i have used in i can't say how long.
gets rid of stuff that no other spyware program can....and i really mean that
fixing machines lately with that god damn XPAntivirus2008. malware bytes catches it all in one sweep and gets rid of it
