Say if I were to buy a nice set of headphones such as the HD595's which are known for great soundstaging, what sort of drivers, sound cards, etc. would I have to use to have accurate positional audio. Would I realy have to sacrifice Stereo music quality by buying an X-fi(EAX3,4,5/SMSS 3d), or could I use a good Stereo card such as the Revo, and use DDL, or Direct audio, for accurate positional audio

I don't know about other's experiences, but from what I have heard the software "surround sound" with headphones just does'nt do surround sound music/movies justice. (note: this is with an audigy 2 zs, not sure if the newer creative labs card does a better job).

With headphones, just don't expect anything more then stereo..... that way you won't be disapointed.

Also, just to clairy. There is a diffrence between a 360degree soundstage (as in a video game) and say, 5.1 channel movies audio.
They go by diffrent computer models and whatnot.... so the video game will warp the sound slightly, whereas the movie has the specific channels warped by themself (ex: the audio is mixed in a way to account for the position of the rear speakers and to blend the positioning with the fronts as per some "standard"). Bottom line.... its not the same audio experience.

Now you just have to decide whether or not having true positioning is important enough to warrent speakers. ^_^

~Hope this helps

I have HD555s, which are similar to the HD595 but not as nice, and I would say the "soundstage" is very good with my Audigy 1. I get a good approximate position to what is happening around me in games. With music it really seems to depend on the recording, some sound like a band playing on a stage 20 feet in front of me while others sound like they are playing in my head.
