Is it okay for the two drives that are being mirrored to be on the same IDE chain?

I want to grab 2 250gb HDD's and set them up as a simple RAID1 array (Software RAID1 in WinXP), but I'm short on IDE channels (the mobo only has two)...meh, i might just grab a RAID card, but still, I'm curious to know...

It'll work but be slowish.

Won't be a problem for the likes of word files.

It really depends on what you are trying to store.

it'll be for backups - pictures, occasional movie or two, critical documents, etc...

Will be fine. Slow but fine.

Unless you copy whole DVD movies around all day.

Buying an el-cheapo raid card will make things worse, even if you can a channel or two.
