Question about SLI compatibility

I have read from various sources on the Internet that not every game is SLI compatible. My question is what exactly happens when you try to run such games on an SLI setup?

Nvidia has a list of games that currently work with 3D.

Pretty much all modern games are SLI compatible. The few exceptions are very old titles that no one really plays anymore or games that just came out and have not yet been optimized to run in multi-gpu config. Doesn't take long before an updated driver fixes this issue though.

You won't see a thing that tells you what's going on. I run AIDA64 (used to be Everest Ultimate) on my G15 LCD keyboard screen that shows me if both GPU's are getting equal amounts of work. Also, if the second card goes into a power saving mode, I know that SLI is not working properly.

There are other tricks to make SLI work for games that, for one reason or another, do not have SLI compatibility.

That means the games still run normally, but only on a single card, right? That's all I care. :)

Yes.

*Edit

You may have to disable SLI for such games since you might end up seeing some weird things on the screen.

Thank you so much for the reply? I have a further enquiry.

Is disabling SLI as easy as changing 3D options in the Nvidia Control Panel? Can it be disabled on a per game basis? :)

Yes, you can disable per game basis but I don't know how effective that is. There is also option to disable it altogether and it's just one simple click.

I have it disabled for league of legends, and other games, it definitely works - one gpu is clearly doing nothing in msi afterburner.

if you own call of duty 4, and want to know what SLI incompatibility looks like, install it without patching it and try it out. You'll see really low framerates in SLI, and higher framerates with single card enabled. :)
