So I understand that with sata drives there is no master and slave like with pata drives however I currently have 2 sata drives installed on my main pc and when I look at the drives in my bios one is listed as IDE master and the other as IDE slave. What exactly is that telling me? Also, on that note, how do you designate which drive you want to have as your primary with your OS installed on it?

That's odd. I'm pretty sure mine are all listed SATA 0 -5, or SATA 1-6. The master/slave designation I might have had on an old old P4 board with first gen SATA, where they were basically adapters inline with IDE channels.

You designate your primary OS install when you installs your OS...? When you install Windows you select the drive.

Most people wisely unplug all accessory drive for the install until they are at the desktop though. Sometimes windows throws some weird MBR stuff around.

Your BIOS is set to use Legacy mode, which forces the SATA drives to appear as PATA.

What is legacy mode and does that mean that I need to turn it off?
