Question About Resolution

I have an Hyundai L90D+ 19" LCD. I play a lot of FPS games where it is better if you use a lower resolution. I know with LCD (from personal experience) that when you use a less than native resolution, it looks bad. It basically looks kind of fuzzy. So that is why I use some AF. I was wondering because my native resolution is 1280x1024 if I could use 640x480 and have black bars on the top and bottom so it looks better. Is there a way I could do this? Thanks.

?

It's not better to use a lower resolution as a general comment regarding FPS games.

The point is just that you must not use a res that is too high for the size of your monitor because everything becomes too small.

I think 1280*1024 is fine on a 19 inch for FPS.

I used to play on a 17" Samsung CRT and I am used to playing at 640x480 so I want to continue playing on that resolution. Also, I use a low resolution because at LAN Centers, the computers usually can't handle more than 800x600 or at most 1024x768 so yeah.

It will look like shite if you stretch the 640x480 image over the whole of the LCD. You can play it with bars on the sides and top and bottom, but it will be very small and you have to tinker with the graphics settings, something that may not be possible at your LAN centers. LCD's have a native resolution that they are meant to run at with a fixed pixel pitch, unlike CRT's which can scale to whatever resolution

It is better to play Counter-Strike 1.6 at lower resolutions, which I have a feeling he plays (could be wrong though).

I want to get the bars but I don't know how. If I get the bars on the top and bottom it should look fine because the image will be split evenly among all the pixels.

I don't know if your monitor supports it, but how you would get it is to have your monitor scale 1:1, meaning that whatever resolution you choose that is the max resolution or lower than that, the display will black out whatever pixels go beyond it.

I'm sorry that I don't know more about your monitor to tell you if its possible and if it is how to do it. Most of them have this option somewhere in the monitor's menus, and not in the graphics drivers where you would set resolution, although if your monitor has its own driver with any menus it could possibly be under there.
