Question about "Reference" Designs

Hi All: Just purchased a Gigabyte 6870 from NG w/ 10% off promo code. This is my 1st reference video card purchase ever. I usually wait until things mature a tad. I've been building my own rigs for sometime now.

My question....Don't you notice that a lot of reference designs in the past have had the same set up. Meaning....The same fan (80mm or 92mm???) towards the back of the video card & it's always enclosed? Am I wrong here? They all look the same!!! I don't know if that's a bad thing...I guess I'm just asking a question here.
 
"most" reference designs are better, at least as far as the electronics go. Look at the 58xx series. Most of the non reference designs use cheaper PCBs and cheaper components in many cases. The refernce cooling could be better, I agree, but it's not bad. The solution works, the partners will come out with better cooling solution, but the question here is, what will you sacrifice to get the better cooling? Maybe you won't be able to volt mod it at all, but you will have better cooling.

Personally, i prefer these designs, I would rather the cooler push the hot air out of my case, rather then disburse it. I was a fan of the HIS IceQ designs back in the ATI 19xx days and now everyone does them and calls them reference. I know my 8800GTS does the same thing.
