This is a noob question, but I am a noob. I'm trying to decide what RAM to get for my DFI Lanparty 865PE motherboard. I was planning on getting the Mushkin Blue Dual Pack 1GB PC-3200 DDR400 RAM. What I was wondering is if maybe the Mushkin Dual Pack 1GB PC-4000 DDR500 RAM would work with the motherboard even though it says it supports DDR400.
 
DDR400 is just the official supported memory for all the mobos, but anything above that will work just fine. Now don't get PC4000 unless u plan on overclocking because that's where u will get a better price to performance gain. It is in my opinion not worth the inflated price if you're running stock.
 
Your board will support PC4000 and higher but there's no real reason to use it if you can run a divider on your board. You'll get better performance with lower speeds and tight timings and you'll still be able to get your FSB high with a mem divider. Only reason Mushkin even released the Enhanced PC4000 sticks was because everyone else like Corsair, Kingston, and OCZ were. When companies release something new, whether its actually any real benefit or not, the other companies have to release some too or people say they are getting left behind.
 
What burningrave says is true. Running a divider will give u the same performance with good ram compared to stuff like PC4000. However, it was my misfortune of aquiring some mushkin lvl 1. PC3200 that wouldn't overclock at all. I'll get about 5000+ with a 5:4 @ 188, so who knows.
 
Yea you dont want to think your going overclock RAM with CH-5 chips and timings of like 2-3-2-6 lol. I tried mine at 214Mhz and the system hard locked with the loooooooooooong DRAM error beep code so i had to take the frickin battary out of the motherboard so i could clear the CMOS and then i had to go in and fix all my settings again :rolleyes: .

I wish motherboards had more divider options. I dont see why they can't have like 7:6 and 9:8 and stuff like that. So that you could overclock like 200-400Mhz and keep your memory at PC3200 speeds. With 5:4 you have to be ready to get it up 500-600Mhz to keep mem speeds high.
 
Eh, I just thought I got deficient ram (I think that's the right word for it) because others kept flaming me, "why are u running a divider? With that ram u can OC to blah blah blah," and heck I don't know any better. I literally couldn't push my chips up to 220mhz. The darn thing wouldn't even post. Strange though cause my kingston value would do 230 @ 2.5-3-3-8 and it had samsung chips. Go figure.
 
CH-5 will run tighter timings then most RAM but its about worthless for OC'ing and thats why i use dividers. I just wish there were more dividers to choose from so if i only wanted a 200-300Mhz OC i could have it.
