Ok i have an nforce mobo with 4 sata and 2 from a Sil connector all are 3.0gbps,
i have a 250gb SATA1 Maxtor 8mb cache and 7200 rpm drive

Anyway the question im asking is can i hook up a WD 250gb SATA1 8mb cache and 7200 rpm drive and raid them either 0 or 1?

i have a raptor as my main drive on SATA Connection 1
the maxtor is currently set to SATA connection 2
Could i just put the WD on SATA connection 3 if the raid would work?

Also which raid is the one for speed?
 
You can add a second 250g drive and create a raid 0 or 1 array.


You could use the raptor and 1 250g drive but you would lose 100g capacity and a lot of speed. Don't do it.
 
Raid 0 is for speed, but on the desktop you really won't see much advantage. Also note that you double your chances of loosing all the data when you put it on a raid 0 array.
 
ok so it doesnt matter if i mix the WD and Maxtor 250 gb together?

Would raid 1 give me a 250 gb drive (2x250) and thats fault tolerant right

Ok thanks dekard i never have done a raid array, and am now thinking if there is much of a performance upgrade to raid 0 on the 2x250 gb 7200 rpm 8mb cache SATA1 hard drives

It will *work*, but performance may be impacted by the fact that you've got two different drive strategies going on. And the array as a whole has to wait for the longer of the two drive operations to complete before going on. And 2x250 will indeed give you a single fault-tolerant volume, but that doesn't mean that data is backed up - when you hit the delete key (or overwrite a file, or it gets corrupted by a virus...), it still removes your data from both drives.

ok but if i do Raid 0 ( I think) will the performance be xx better>?
 
Probably not, depending on what you're doing with it. About the only applications that benefit from raid 0 are video editing and databases. Other than that, it's a draw, and you lose reliability - if either drive fails, you lose all your data.

 
ok so im prob not going to go raid ill just pick up a WD 320gb sata1 drive for like 89 dollars

Are you saying this because the data is spread across the 2 drives, and if 1 goes your screwed? Or is there something else that makes it un reliable?
 
actually just ordered another 250gb sata from WD upgrade program, for 65+3 dollar tax thats a nice price. You guys can all get it too by calling 18002754932, all you need is a old WD drive's serial number and a credit card. They also have 36gb raptors think they are like 70-80 dollars :/ but they have the 320gb ide for 105 and the sata for 110
