Below is a review that someone left about the raptors on newegg about the advantages of raid.
I have a feeling hes kind of wrong?



Pros: Aright, this drive is supper fast for a single drive and can sustain 102.6 mb/s data Transpher rate

Cons: only use this drive if you do not like raid you can get the wd800jd for 54 bucks and that means you can get 3 for the price of one. there the exact same as this except there 7200 RPM. that means you will get about 53.6 mb/s average Transpher rate out of each drive. 160.8 mb/s for all three drives. so that is 240 gigs at 160 mb/s with wd800jd drives. so why would you get a raptor when you can get more faster data Transpher rates out of the wd800dj

Other Thoughts: come on people unless your afraid of playing with raid theres much better deals out there. also i gave it a 5 because it is a supper fast single drive and if you have the money you could raid these togeather. still they are way over priced
 
When you RAID you don't just add transfer rates together. It's similar to how you don't just add up all the CPU speeds in a multi-processor system and get a CPU speed. (dual 2 GHz CPUs does not mean you have a 4 GHz CPU).

Thanks to the parallelism of RAID you might get better performance, but it depends on many factors (are you striping? etc.).

So the guy who posted that is a little wrong, and exactly what RAID level is he talking about anyway?

Also, Raptors don't transfer at 100 MBps, I think the highest numbers I've seen are around the 60 MBps range.
 
The raptors decrease seek times by a good bit. That's their main advantage, and RAID actually increases seek times. That's why nobody's "caught on" and done precisely what he suggests.
