I have a Question about Raid 5.
Say i have four 320gb seagate sata2 hdds in raid 5, can i add another of the same hdd to the array to increase the size?
thanks for your help for a nOob:D

Only if the controller supports OCE or ORLM(I.E. the RocketRaid 2320).

A word of warning, if a drive drops during the expansion, all of your data will be lost. Also, make sure you select a filesystem that can be expanded. That is why I went with XFS in Linux and now run it directly on the block device(no partitions). I simply expand my array and type xfs_growfs /dev/sda in the console and it will expand the filesystem to fill the array.

The vast majority of MBs do not support raid 5 (although it does seem to be gaining popularity), much less OCE.

I suggest Highpoint for general raid needs if you end up buying a card.

It's probably good to think about backups before you start relying on OLCE/etc. -- these are really not meant to be tools which let you avoid having a backup; instead, they're tools while let you maintain uptime. Doing a RAID deletion, creation, and data restoration from backup is often faster. Lots of things can go wrong during the expansion/rebulding and file system expansion steps, so having a backup is much better than relying on everything to go flawlessly when doing this sort of stuff with this much data, especially for the first time.

would it be most cost affective and easier to just use the integrated raid controller and when i need to rebuild the array, transfer the data to another pc/server until the array is rebuilt and then move the data back?
I think this sure would cost alot less and save fustration if something goes wrong
but idk...would this work ok?
