I am upgrading my NAS server to a 4x3TB RAID 5 array and I am curious: If my RAID controller (Syba SY-PCI40010) dies, do I have to have the same controller to be able to access/read from the RAID partition or will I have to replace the controller with another identical controller?
I am currently running Windows 7 on an Intel Atom dual 1.8ghz server with 4GB of memory. I was running 4x2TB drives but no RAID and recently had a drive die on me, so I am upgrading to a RAID 5 setup and moving all of the data (media) onto the new array. The OS is installed on a 30GB SSD, so I can swap out the OS pretty easily. Would there be any benefit to moving to NAS4free other than a possible throughput increase? I use this server to stream media to my HTPC and it has worked fine, but if it would make it easier to rebuild the RAID array in the event of a controller failure/change, I am very open to the idea.
