Is there an advantage to having a quad with 12 MB of shared L2 catch that may have 2 cores idle most of the time as opposed to a dual core with 6MB of shared L2 catch ? Question being 12MB catch alone a performance asset over the fact of having 4 cores ?

The Quads 12mb cache is more like 6 x 2. The current quads are two dual cores slapped together, meaning there's 12mb all total, but only 6 availbe for use as each half of the chip needs to keep identical cache.

This is why AMD claims their Phenom is "true" quad core and intel's aren't.

yea AMD has to claim some sort of difference. I bet they are selling 1/4 the chips intel is.

funny. i wasnt aware the q6600 was not a "true quad core". it has 4 cores packed in there, dont it :)

Heh. Neither is "true" quad core. Just different implementations of the same concept. Obviously Intel's approach doesn't cost them much peformance, if any.

1/4? AMD is lucky if they are selling 1/10th of the quads that Intel is right now...

So the Q6700 is the same not a true quad core as well then? That is a odd thing, like buying a pet octupus and getting on 4 legs.........

Good Day
