Question about PSU and SLI

I was planning to purchase an antec true power2 550 psu
then i was informed that would not be enough to use two 7800 gt
because you need a 600 power supply for sli to run decent

Is this true or a bunch of bs?
Because ive heard people using 400-500 power supplies with out having any problems

I plan only to use 1 hard drive, 1 dvd burner, 1 regular dvd drive, 1 floppy
for extra devices

they used an Antec NeoPower 480W Modular Power Supply for 2 7800gtx
