I just recently started keeping up with computer hardware again...

But I built a computer before I started doing that!!!!

I needed a computer for school so I built one quickly.

But I have Pentium D 2.66 GHz computer, and it runs at 60C at idle when sitting in BIOS.

Is this normal? And when C2D processor is it equivalent to?

I tried using tons of different programs to monitor the CPU temperature in Windows, but I must have tried 10 different programs and NONE of them worked. From Intel based things, to Speedfan, nothing :eek:.



I guess I just want to know how bad my processor is haha.
 
Its not exactly bad depending on what you are doing. Older series Pentiums ran hot and thats a fact, Jack. Are you using the stock heatsink? Is there any particular error you got when you ran those programs in Windows? Also, try Everest.
 
Yeah I used Everest as well.

Even nvidia ntune can't recognize it.


I play alot of Counter-Strike: Source. That's about it other than image creation ie: Photoshop Illustrator stuff.

There is no error, just they don't recognize my CPU as a temp. Just one of my Harddrives, and the temperature of my Video Card.

For the heatsink I am using ThermalTake Golden Orb II.

Just between my 2.66GHz Pentium D, and eVGA 8600GT, on demanding FPS maps on CS:S like Nuke and Inferno in matches while recording I get low FPS. Like 30-40.

My friend says it's my processor. I just say bad video card. I just wanted general opinion on Pentium D processors is all.

Thinking about upgrading to a C2D or QC. Not sure though.

Intel Pentium D 805 2.66 GHz Dual Core.

Can anyone compare what the equivalent C2D processor is?

This is no direct equivalent as they're different architectures. The E1240 appears to be generally faster than the Pentium D 805 in all the benchmarks I've looked at, but that's the cheapest C2D around (it's actually branded a Pentium Dual Core, but it's a C2D).
 
if your temp isn't showing up in windows, let me guess.. you have a HP or Dell or similar. Not sure if you'll be able to drop a core2 chip in that machine or not.

The 805's run very hot with stock cooling. 60c idle is not unheard of, especially in a case with low cooling. 2 netburst cores on a 90nm process.. yuck. But I did run one at 3.7ghz for a long time.. they're not to bad chips, just hot.

A core2 will run far cooler, even with the stock cooling. Built on a smaller process and lower clock speed.

I built the computer myself with parts.

The processor
mobo - Intel d945GCCR
1 gb RAM (no name)

etc.

The cooling might be the problem.. I only have 2 120mm fans and 1 80 mm fan.
 
It sounds to me like a problem with your CPU HSF mounting. Make sure all the clips/pins are tight and that you put thermal paste(very thin layer) between the CPU and the HSF. 805's run hot, but I don't think 60c idle in BIOS is reasonable.
 
I probably mounted and cleaned 3 times.

The first time I probably did it correctly..

Thought it was running hot.. Reseated myself... still ran the EXACT same. starts at like... 30... then starts escalating to 60... hangs out at 60.

Reseated with a friend to make sure I was doing it right..

Did the exact same thing escalated to 60.

That's what I get for not keeping up with computer stuff, and then jumping on sales at TigerDirect because they only had it for one day XD
 
Tiger Direct ..... there's your first problem.

I would send the proc back....say it's defective. 60c at idle is rediculous, especially if you've reseated the HSF several times with the same results. Send that board back too. Maybe send it all back and buy from Newegg. LOL

Last, and final, time I bought from TD everything that arrived was DOA. Mobo, CPU, DVD drive, ram and vid card. LOL...entire system was DOA....I had to laugh....what else could I do? LOL
 
Ahh.. I bought it at the actual store..

we were surfing Tigerdirect on my friends Wii, then he saw it and told me to get it because I REALLY needed a cheap decent computer ASAP for school since my other one completely died and was outdated.

Then me being out of computer for a long time.. trusted him.. but yeah.. that's how I ended up with it. It's been over a year now I think almost that I've had it.
