Ok, so the prescott has 64-bit extensions. Just not active..

here's my question

when the 64-bit extension is activated, will we have to get new mobo's?

Say i'm using a IC7-MAX3, will i have to get a new mobo to run a 64-bit prescott, or will i be able to just flash my BIOS or something?

They won't be activated in the Socket 478 form, supposedly. The 64-bit capabilities won't be revealed until Socket 775/T, for whatever reason. So, of course, you'll need a new motherboard, and probably a BIOS flash when the time comes. I know, it sucks, but it's still only a rumor.

Intel is going to debut 64-bit extended chips on LGA775. Their not going to release any more on socket 478. There's no reason to. Socket 478 can barely supply the power needed to run the current Prescott chips out now. When EM64T is activated most likely it helps draw even more power but probably not a whole lot. Ither way, you wont see it till the new LGA775 chips start rolling out. And i would say when they start releasing the chips on LGA775 it wont be long till they have the 64-bit extensions enabled because Intel's not going to want to wait around once XP-64 is officially out. All the sources i've seen are pointing towards 3rd-4th quarter for the 64-bit desktop chips. And that would seem highly probable since Microsoft is planning to release a full working version of XP-64 then. There's no reason to release the chips now though because the beta sucks.

When Microsoft releases a new Windows version, OEM's and others i'm sure will want to start using it and Intel will have to have out 64-bit chips. There's no guessing about it. Up till now there was hardly any driver support, no Windows 64-bit OS (beta doesn't count), and no real demand. Software vendors and game developers are ready to take the plunge and Intel is going to have to give it.

When are we gonna see LGA775 Processors and mobos that we can buy? I thought it was the end of April? however the end of April is here and I dun see anything
