Question about Pci-E 3.0 / 2.0

So im allmost certainly not good with this stuff. and i need some real answers from peopel who knows what their doing and what their talkign about :p so here goes.

im the owner of an Asus Maximus Gene-Z Gen3 mobo. with 8gigs of G.skill 1600Mghz ram. and a 2600k core i7 CPU.


Im still in the market to get a good hardcore performing GPU. and i've been following the gtx680(kepler) quite closely.

but im not quite sure i understand it correctly if i can even use one.

the Gene-zgen3 board supports Pci-E 3.0. but states that it depends on the cpu.

so does the 2600k support 3.0?. and will the gtx 680 even run in the board i have if the 2600k DOESNT support 3.0 ?.

Torn between the gtx 580 3gig and the 2gig evga gtx 680. since it'll be jsut about 2 weeks till i can buy anything anyways. im lookign for some solid answers to decide wich route im going with.

i7 2600k does NOT support pci-e 3.0. However pci-e 3.0 cards are backwards compatible so your still good if you want a gtx 680. If you only plan to buy one you won't see a bottleneck at pci-e 2.0 x16. If you want to use sli you may get a slight bottleneck in some games running pci-e 2.0 at x8.
 
But, if you upgrade to an IB cpu (When released), you'll get your PCIE 3.0.
 
Very short answer: either card will work great in your system!

Short answer: They will run at PCI-E 2.0 speeds since the PCI-E lanes come from the CPU in a socket 1155 system and your 2600k only supports PCI-E 2.0 (Ivy Bridge will be the first 1155 cpu to support PCI-E 3.0). Assuming you run a single card at x16, you should have plenty of bandwidth available and there shouldn't be any real noticeable difference between your current system and a newer one running PCI-E 3.0. You can also feel grateful that your PCI-E 2.0 runs at full speed and not the half-speed nonsense of the socket 1156 chipsets! =)
 
So in short the 680 should work wonders ? :D sounds good.

Question about the cpu then. since this board is a Z68 chipset board. will it actualyl be able to support IB ?
