Question about Overclockix

Fogive me If this should be in the Linux sub-forum. But I have a few Questions on how Overclockix works with folding.
I got an AMD xp-2400 that I got ( thanks Kyle ) and its going be be put online soon, The only problem is I have Cats and have to have enclosed Boxen so they dont get zapped. SO....
I have the rig built and I cant find a Hard drive for it . I was going to run Overclockix as a live CD and fold from that.
My questions are
1) So I can run the Cd with no hard drive in my box?
2) Running Folding@Home, where do the WUs get downloaded and stored , The RAm>>?
3) Can I run the latest Big packets with Overclockix?
4) Any other tips you guys have for it would be nice

4) as soon as you get a HD, try out my distro. Easier to admin, from my point of view. I'm working on a web-based interface: you can see what progress the boxen have, and soon there will be the capability to reboot the boxen, restart folding, etc through it.

BTW, if anyone has suggestions as to things that they frequently have to do to the boxen one at a time, I'd be grateful for suggestions. I've mostly got my garden nailed down into a schedule, so I don't have to maintain them much. What breaks on your machines a lot?

1) Yes, and you'll want 256MB ram or more for big packets, or 128mb for normal wu's
2) Yes, happens automatically and saves in your /home directory which is in a ramdrive
3) Yes, but be sure you don't run out of ram. There's a flags file in the folding directory, edit it so that you add -advmethods. Also edit the client.cfg for your name and team, and make sure there's bigpacket=yes. There's two folding directories by default. Run the command foldoff. Then delete the second folding directory. Then turn folding back on with the command winefold. At least that's how to do it with v3.7. v3.4 and LTSP 2.1 are a little different.
4) You can switch desktops into something lighter than KDE if you find ram is running short while doing big packets. In the KDE menu, KNOPPIX > Utilities > change/restart desktop.
 
Few questions for ya linux pro's-

If using a diskless setup, what happens when the power goes out? Will the diskless nodes continue to try and boot from the server until the server is ready for them. I'm guessing it takes longer for the server to load than a node to power on and look for the server.

If using either diskless or disk based, how do you tell which boxen is which? Can you set these to static IP's or somethings, just trying to figure out if one has a brain fart, how do you physically tell them apart.

Also on diskless, power goes out and all the work is lost? Unless they have a home directory on the server I'm guessing. Running off a CD your screwed?
 
The typical diskless setup uses a server to serve an OS image to the clients, and also a network share for them to save their folding directories to so they won't be lost if the power fails. Since they're all using the same image, they use DHCP to get an IP address, and depending on the order they boot, they might fold on a different directory if rebooted. Generally to keep things straight, one knows the IP address range of the clients, and names their folding directories by IP (or its done by a script this way). There'll be mixing and matching for which client folds in which folding directory if you boot them all at once rather than in a predetermined order, but ultimately that would not hurt anything.

And yes, they'll generally keep trying to contact the server until its ready to hand out the Os image.

What's the advantage of Synergy over VNC or ssh? I'm not trying to mock you or anything, I really want to know... I'd be glad to switch (or at least add) synergy if it's under a meg or so...
 
I was making the request for overclockix, but i suppose both would be nice.

I've got a very nice desk setup enough to support 5 17" monitors side by side. ( I like my desktop space ) VNC is fine if you want to remote control, but if you just want to actively monitor a PC Synergy let's me use one set of keyboard and mouse for all of them seemlessly.

*btw in the latest release the rpm is only 510k

I read your post as "2 17" rather than 5. Then I reread it and i was like :eek: . I have 2 17s on my desk (on 2 computers) and I thought I was doing pretty good... let's see, I have 3 15s on my floor, do those count?

I'm compiling Synergy as we speak. The next release will be in a couple of days, and it'll include Synergy unless it's really huge. I can't use RPMs for this, so I'm building it myself.

Edit: It's small enough, I'll throw it in. And I have FTP going now, so I can upload it... I've got a script I want to debug, and then the upload is coming. Please give it a whirl.

edit2: The menu on your website doesn't work for me... ?
 
How would it be best to configure this? So far what I have for the Synergy server is:

So what you'd do is change your client name to be "connect" and go at it. Fold-server does DNS, so it'll tell you where to find fold-server, that's not a problem.

If you were running 3 computers and wanted to access all 3 with synergy, would you run 2 servers and 1 client? or what? I'm afraid I really don't quite get the concept... perhaps you can explain.

edit: aha! I think I get it... so, in the example above, you'd run one server and two clients, right? The client/server thing seems a bit blurred in their definition. I was confused until I tried the mouse on the server machine and it moved onto the other screen.

This is pretty cool. :D I really like having 2 monitors now...
 
I think you've got it, on win32 it's one program and you select either server or client in the GUI, but I of course would want my main PC as the server so I can use my keyboard and mouse on the folding server. Which means the folding server would need the client.
