Question about overclocking (never did it before)

I just ordered a complete system with the BFG 6800U OC card. It comes OC at 425 core speed. My question is will I be able to OC this to Ultra Extreme speeds, i.e. 450 core? I don't know anything about OC and I don't want to open my case and add fans, etc. Can someone give me an idea how to go about it? Will I need special cooling to do this? I think my computer will come with 4 fans already installed (3 with the case plus a heatsink fan.) Any help appreciated.

well u should add a different cooler to your U once u get it, because if u overclock the temps on the chip itself will go up. their are some programs out there u might want to check out like rivatuner and powertools that u can overclock your card with. In my opinion i don't think its necessary especially for now, because that card can woop ass especially at stock speeds. maybe later itll be a better option.

What kind of cooler would I need to add? I was under the impression I could safely OC to Ultra Extreme speeds without any special cooling.

well, the stock cooler is pretty heavy duty and keeps the core pretty cool, the only swap I can think of that wouldn't be a downgrade would be a switch to water. (also BFG uses Arctic Silver on theirs, so it is even better stock)

So are you guys saying I would probably need to water cool to increase the speed by 25? :(

no, I am saying the stock cooler is fine, just watch your temps and do it slowly, checking for artifacts the whole way.

No, for a 25mhz OC you will be fine with the stock cooler.

How high would you expect me to be able to go at stock cooling I guess is my question. Thanks.

It all depends on the luck of the draw, i doubt these first gen 6800s will overclock too well, your already buying the OCed version , i would say expect an OC in the range from 30-40

You mean increase by 30-40, i.e. to 455-465 core?

yes, they are getting 470 on the WCing version of the card, i would expect, not guarentee around 460 on the air version, it also depends on the Q I asked BFG dude below...

I also have a question for BFG Dude:
Does BFG hand select the best OCing Cores for its WCing setup? Or do they just randomly choose cores for that card?

What does "WCing version" mean? Is that the same as the OC version I'm getting?

WCing = Watercooling version, your probably getting the regular one, which has the fan and the big heatsink, the watercooling version will be able to overclock higher, but it needs a watercooling setup in your computer

You will be able to get 50mhz overclock easy, to unlock the nvidia overclocking utility you will need to change some registry values, just google coolbits.

I hope you're right. Thanks. By the way, would it shorten the life of my card to OC? Should I wait until the end of my card's life to OC?

The reason i dont give it a high OCing proabaility is becasue one, it is already overclocked, and two i heard that they are having trouble making the Ultra cores.

In theory it does shorten it, but be smart, only OC the card when you need to, like when your playing next gen games, dont keep the card OCed after your done playing your game or when it is overkill (like playing CS)

if u have proper cooling then no, it won't shorten it, check the warranty too. OC whenever u feel its appropriate when u just need those extra fps like in farcry. and u probably won't need to overclock until the end of your card anyway itll be fine for doom3,hl2, and farcry, its the next next generation games that should really test your card. plus this all depends on your cpu too.

As I understand it, this card comes with a lifetime warranty. I assume the warranty is void if you OC, right? How would they be able to tell that was the reason your card died?

Ive never had a shortened lifespan due to overclocking, but then again I dont keep my graphics card for 10 years.

Manufacturers leave a comfortable buffer with their clocks, 50mhz isnt a problem, but dont expect much more than 50mhz.

About only overclocking when you need it? My cards been overclocked 50mhz core and 50mhz ram for a year now, no problems. A nvidia card will automatically lower the clocks in 2d mode, to keep the temp / fan noise down.

It should void your warranty, but afaik they cant tell, just dont mention it. Technically your not lying if you dont say you did or didnt. =)

I wouldn't worry about oc'ing the core causing a lot of heat problems, especially with that huge hsf on it (unless you case has poor ventilation and all your temps will rise just by using a card this powerful with NO oc)

It's more the memory heat you should worry about a little more. But with a simple and small oc like that you should have no problems and require nothing special.

the memory on the 6800U has heatpipe cooling, I think that is sufficient

The case I'm getting is the Lian-Li PC-V1000 Aluminum Ultra Quiet which I hear runs a little warmer due to the insulation. I hope I don't run into a problem.

sweet case. props on the choice of the lian-li. this case should run quite well, even with the insulation, as it has an improved cooling design. let me know what you think of the case and how the oc goes.
