Question about onboard graphics & GPU2 Client

Ok, I have a question, if you bought a motherboard with integrated graphics, and then you installed a nice GPU2 Client & card with dummy connectors so it thought that the monitor was connected to it. Yet nothing was actually running on that graphics card except the F@H code, do you think there would be much of a increase in PPD? Or are the basic windows code, etc such a small percentage of today's card's usage you wouldn't see much of a change?
 
Integrated gpu's will most likely see about 1/2 of so the points. Plus they are definitely not designed (most of them) for 24/7 100% loads... Try it, but my guess would the be PpDpW is going to be unfavorable.

 
I agree with Sunin, you will surely cook the motherboard in no time. Also, integrated gpu produce lousy ppd as well so it's not worth the expense of ruining a board.

 
No no no...I guess I didn't explain myself clearly. So that you can use the computer for regular every day tasks, put a dummy VGA connector on the PCIe card ATI or nVidia, and run the internal graphics card for the primary output, not for Folding@Home. Then run the Folding@Home GPU2 client, and that way it doesn't have to waste any cycles on rendering the Windows Desktop, etc.

Did I make sense that time? Basically what I'm trying to figure out is, if it's worth the extra few $ to get a motherboard with built in graphics so I can take the burden of running the Windows Desktop off of the card that is Folding 24/7.
 
Oh, I see what you mean... It should be possible...

I will do the same setup with my HTPC with the onboard graphics connected via HDMI to the TV and the 8800GTS folding with a dummy VGA plug but I dunno if it is painless and I will experiment this next week.

 
Thanks bro!!! I guess the other question is, if it yeilds a higher PPD, because I know Windows Vista is a hog on resources!!! I turned off all of Areo, and put it down to the regular OS.

This is doable, but I'll help you out a ton!

instead of doing a dummy vga connector, add this command to your shortcut:

-forcegpu nvidia_g80

And you no longer need a dummy vga connector! :)

Oh yeah one more rumor, is that if you enable onboard video it can cause your CPU OC to go wonky... So say you got 3.6 without video on, you might only be able to get 3.4 or 3.2Ghz stable with it on. Not sure never had mine turned on.

 
Woa, so by using that command, you don't need a monitor hooked up to the card? What other cards does that work with? g80, g92, g200?


 
the g80 flag as I put it works for ALL Nvidia based GPUs straight from Uncle Fungus's mouth!
 
Great find Sunin! Just to clarify a bit AND for our ATI brothas...

there are only three flags: ati_r600 , ati_r700 and nvidia_g80 . It's mostly for use with things like the tesla range of cards (on nvidia's side), where you aren't going to be able to use a screen to start the program. I would guess that a change was made between the r600 and r700 series which meant that they need to be handled slightly differently, whereas G80, its descendants and successors are all similar enough to be handled the same way.


 
I can confirm that you still need to extend your desktop to use your other GPU in vista... have not had that issue in XP...
 
On my XP32 setup I couldn't OC the second card until I extended the desktop to it. Once I did that it showed up in Rivatuner and all was good. gonna try the forcegpu switch though and see if I can get around the desktop issue on my system.


 
How did this work out. Was anything gained by using the GPU only for folding and the built in jobby for the desk top? Interested to know...

Yeah +1 on that :) I have a 8800 GS runnin' under WinXP w/SP3 ATM. The board (GA -G31M-S2L) with the 8800 GS on it has the onboard VGA deal. I am very, very interested as to whether this idea is feasible for a boost in pernts ( I get about 4500 now) and if the computer is more responsive (I ain't had no problemos in that arena).

Please post a follow up post for those of us that have lost touch with the "Shadow" ("only the Shadow knows" or something like that :rolleyes:)

Anyone tried this?????????? I would think there has to be a gain if GPU is only used for folding and rest of system uses the on board VGA..
 
I will be working on doing tests Pooch666 as soon as I get my electricity issue solved, and I'll post back to this thread once I have some #'s.


 
Keep in mind most if not all motherboards with onboard video either force you to turn it off in bios, move a jumper or just plain bypass it when the mobo sees an add on graphics card.

Then there is the issue of needing another set of drivers for the onboard, not sure how that would affect PPD.

Be interesting to see who makes what work though;)

I always just plug it in and it worked :confused:

(bios must auto select)

 
Man, I can't wait to see if this is possible and if it is, will it improve the ppd? (this bein' a pernts w[H]ore is killin' me, only kiddin') :p I've got a GA-G31M-S2L mobo with a 8800 GS GPU crunchin' away ATM. As Kendrak said I just plugged the card in (no jumpers, no BIOS shutoff deal) and the card worked after I DL'ed and installed the 177.35 driver to crunch GPU2. :D The board also came with a CD with some nVIDIA drivers for the onboard VGA on it. :confused:

Please post some more info on this lelliott731. I think I've got enough VGA drivers if I need to, as BillR speculated, have another set of drivers. Between the mobo CD drivers, the CD drivers that came with the card (some ancient driver that wouldn't even fold :() and the 177.35 I'm currently using, I've got drivers out tha' ying yang. :rolleyes:

I just wonder if the computer can figure out which driver goes where. :eek:

JW: If you're getting 4500ppd on the 8800GS already, you've already got it tuned pretty well and are in the upper average range of 4500-4700ppd on it. but hey.. if'n you can pick up 2-300ppd for free, why not eh?

Here's a linky for you to all the 177.x version slimmed down drivers and inf files if necessary. Any of them above 177.35 "should" be F@H capable. These are all several megs lighter than the Nvidia international drivers (I believe they're english only) so they're kinda nice to have.. I have the 177.41/177.66/177.79 and 177.83 downloaded myself for testing. Now all I have to do is get some time to test them...;)

Yeah, brother nomad8u, I'd probably be better off just leavin' the machine alone, but you know how it is with us newly christened "pernts w[H]ores". :eek:

Who knows perhaps the cure will be found in 2-300 more pernts (it certainly won't change the height of the grass I'll be peein' in :rolleyes:)

I can honestly say, if you're lookin' for a cheap and easy way to get some pernts get the 8800 GS from the egg (about 70 some giddas after MIR). Just don't forget to set the priority higher on the CPU2 client (FahCore_11.exe) than on any CPU SMP client (FahCore_a1 or a2.exe) you might have runin'. My method is to set the CPU SMP client (FahCore_a1 or a2.exe) to run on cores 0-2 on my Q6600 to "low" and the GPU2 client (FahCore_11.exe) for my "el cheapo" 8800 GS to run on core #3 to "below normal" (I think the CPU default affinity is 0-3 and the default GPU2 affinity is 3 and the priority for both is low :confused:)

Edit: ATM I'm getting 4507 GPU2 and 1501 SMP CPU2 (WU 2665). I should be well satisfied with 4507 + 1501 = 6008 for a Q6600 G0 only OC'ed to 3 GHz (All these #'s are from FAHmon 2.3.2b.) :D

A lot of us guys use our main computer to fold. I notice when just doing net stuff, there is little drop off in Avg Time per Step, maybe a second or two. But if doing other stuff on the computer such as Word, some light stuff in Photo Shop, even playing Solitare, there is a drop of 6 to 8 seconds ATPS. Shouldn't this drop be negated by using the onboard AVG and leaving the GPU to fold????

I tried this with onboard Ati 3200 and a 4850 and I didnt like it much, but nvidia could be different.
 
Ya know, one of the biggest benefits of onboard video is that you can use that video to RDP (assuming you're not using it to fold). With the GPU2 client, you can NOT use RDP to get access to boxen you're running headless. You have to go with vnc or other software to remotely connect.

 
Vnc works better anyway TightVNC actually !

I have Tight VNC on every boxen I own that is not running notfreds. Love it, I have used it now for... I don;t know..... has to be close to a decade.
