Question about OC'ing video cards

in terms of FPS, how much would you say it increases performance? I have heard about only 5 FPS which in my opinion doesn't seem worth all the extra stress on the video card. Just looking to see what the consensus is.

depends on how much the overclock is. if its 100mhz on the gpu 100mhz on the ram, the difference isn't very high. if you can get an extra 200 mhz out of the gpu, shaders, and ram then the difference gets much bigger.

now if your overclocking that 8800GTS 640 in your sig, you won't be able to overclock it enough to see a huge difference.

the only card I've ever gotten a significant boost after overclocking was my reference 5850. I was able to get 1030/1200 from the stock 750/1000.

it was good a 10-15fps boost.

I have 460M SLI in my laptop, oc'd from stock 675Mhz to around 800. I am sure I can oc more if I want to, but I'm too lazy :D
Also oc'd memory, but I'm new to oc and not sure about the limit of VRAM oc. Currently I just have a small oc from 1250 to around 1400.

I get around 8-10% improvement in benchmarking taking my card from 880/2000 to 960/2200, temps don't change much.

Can't really tell the difference in games to be honest, although it helps with AA in BC2 a bit.

If you watercool then stress is no problem. Its all about heat. Take the heat away as much as you can the GPU will last forever.

I OC my 6990 using the bios switch and its under water. I do not get a massive gain but again its underwater so it runs cool.
