So I've been pondering this question for a while and it's bothering me now that I don't know the answer:

Question:
When purchasing a Norco 4020, how can I tell if my raid controller will actually make the HDD activity LED's light up on the caddies. Does this rely on the raid controller ability to pass this information across the SATA cable? If so, how can I make sure my RAID controller can do this. OR does it rely on the backplane on the Norco 4020?

Answer:
"Insert Response here"

The Norco's HDD activity lights are not dependent on the controller. There's a logic chip on each section of the backplane that I assume monitors the TX and RX lines of the SATA bus and drives each LED. There's no connection on the backplane for the lights, they're built in. No I2C or SDIO or anything like that.

BTW I do own a 4020 - Great server case for the $$.
