Hey guys,

I have read through several posts, done some calculations on
http://www.extreme.outervision.com/index.jsp and talked to several different people and really I am some what conflicting here on how much power I am going to need. According to the calculator it is saying I am going to need a 1000w power supply, am I really going to need this much power?

Specs for new Rig:
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600
EVGA 768-P2-N831-AR GeForce 8800GTX 768MB - x 1
CORSAIR XMS2 DOMINATOR 2GB (2 x 1GB)
ASUS P5K-E/WIFI-AP LGA 775 Intel P35
WD Caviar RE WD1600YS 160GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - x 2
WD Caviar RE2 WD5000ABYS 500GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - x 1

Current Case Carryovers:
80mm Case fan - x6
Memorex DVD-RW Dual Layer 16x - x1

Currently the case has the following power supply and I realize this won't be enough.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817148006

So, with the prospect of possibly going SLI in a year or two what would you guys suggest for a power supply? Money isn't a major block but I don't want to spend any more then $200 if at all possible.

Thanks for the help,
-Chad

Edit: Sorry the title isn't very descriptive, my bad.

damn they should make these calculators illegal or something (btw i think you selected a fhew things incorrect) ^^
rule nr. 1, do not trust blindly anything, but a multimeter in computer sience
the things you listed here could be handled by a good quality 400W psu, if sli is planned a 500W psu would be ok. maybe the corsair hx520 would be a good thing to buy but going over 550W is not required, if you buy anything higher it wont really matter, you'll just have a bunch of unused power

I wouldn't even use the Apevia as a doorstep; too light.

If you plan on SLI 8800GTX (or G90 SLI), I suggest the Antec Truepower Quattro 850, PCP&C Silencer 750, Silverstone Olympia / Decathlon 750/850/1000, or the Silverstone Zeus 850.

While a 500w will power it, it'd be at full load; Bad things happen when psu's are at full load for extended periods of time. Plus, G90 power requirements aren't known yet.

The problem I see is that your board (P5K-E) uses an Intel P35 chipset; It won't support SLI, and it never will.

Get the Corsair HX620. Best powersupply for the price IMO. All that 1kW stuff is BS unless you're running 100 HDs. The Corsair is good enough to run a quadcore dual 8800gtx setup. Plus it's modular and has a 5 year warranty.

Se as how you cannot go SLi on your chosen motherboard, you should never be needing anywhere near a 1000W psu, a good 500W psu could run your system fine although I'd probably go for 600W or so for feeling safe, the Corsair HX620 is a great option here IMO. Even if you'd like more power than this I see no reason why you should need 1000W, unless ofcause you end up with CrossFire and a huge watercooling system...

1000 W is too much! I vote for an Antec 550 w or maximum Corsair HX620!

Thanks guys!

I'm by far and away no electrical engineer but I knew that 1000w sounded like way to much power. Glad to hear that I won't need to drop a ton of cash on a power supply. As far as the mother board I am not sure how I didn't catch that but thanks for picking up on that.

I will most likely end up going with either the Corsair HX620 or the corsair hx520 for the modular design and good quality.

Thanks,
-Chad

Also, I'm pretty sure that your computer won't even fully utilize even close to the 620 watts that the corsair is rated at.

the egg does not have the Antec, who all has them?
