question about naming domain.

i have a pretty simple question that's been bugging me for a while. im trying to learn MS's ways of networking and Im a little confused. When naming your domain, some guides says to name it domain.com, some says to us domain.extension (ie domain.local, domain.temp, domain.home, etc), and some say to use just domain. which one is the right way? does it even matter?

Both can be correct depending on how your network is setup,
Make sure you use proper naming conventions according to RFC 1123
