I've had mine for almost 2 years now, 120gb OCD ssd drive. I've read that most of these last only 2 years if you're lucky. Should I anticipate a break down and back up all my shit on the new ssd?

Is slowdown the only factor on wear n tear on a ssd?
 
You should always anticipate a breakdown in your storage medium and make constant backups. As far as SSD's they can last awhile depending on the make/model/ownership/usage patterns.

Try using SSD Life Free (google they since stopped offering it) to check the lifespan from the S.M.A.R.T data and see a visual representation of the percentage you have about left on it.

SSD wear and tear only occurs when writes happen because of the nature of the technology. The more writes or write intensive the usage, the more wear and tear. Lack of TRIM support can also add to this, but most drives and OSes that people are using them on these days support TRIM automatically. SSD's naturally get slower just like hard drives do the more you fill up. Once you start getting past 50% on either it can be noticeable, or more clear via benchmarks.
 
If an SSD is only lasting 2 years you are seriously not leaving enough space on it (say around 15-20% of usable space for longevity reasons) or you are benchmarking/write a metric crap ton to it constantly, standard usage for the vast majority of consumers if I recall Samsung, OCZ, Intel and many other makers tried to get an average lifespan of ~10 years.

I do recall somewhere hearing that x amount of write endurance say 10k is an average some blocks more some blocks less this is why they have all the fancy stuff built into the controllers and why they very much advise leaving room on the drive for the things to function properly. TRIM, garbage collection, over-provisioning, wear-leveling and so forth.

seems fairly cut and dry, old drives die quicker if hammered for sure, new drive technically do have their cells die faster but there is also more cells, more overprovisioning etc, so it seems generally speaking as I put it the way I did and the way I have heard it many times with many different brands, NAND type and so forth, most people using the drive as intended, not causing it to have power loss and so forth, you should get many years out of it, to the point you will more then likely replace the drive before it goes bad, my 60gb Agility 3 has at last count, 17kGB written to the NAND and was at 86% remaining life.
 
OCD SSDs will burn out faster than other types of SSDs.

Since you have no backup of your SSD, you should BACK IT UP NOW. All SSDs and HDDs will fail, sooner or later.

When you say "most of these last only 2 years if you're lucky", did you mean a particular OCZ SSD or all SSDs in general? Some OCZ SSDs were that bad, but it's certainly not true for all SSDs.
 
I pretty sure leaving unused space isn't necessary since Samsung drives and Crucial MLC have reserve space built-in hence why the capacities are 120, 250, 500 instead of binary numbers.
 
umm no you still need to leave space. They have over provisioning built in yes, but it is not a massive amount only a few gb at best, more meant to have a few cells in case some burn out. Fill it up and watch performance and lifespan plummet, just cause the designers built them intelligently, does not mean the user should be foolish in their use :)
 
I've got a 128GB Crucial SSD in my gaming machine. It's about 3 years old now and still going strong, (about 75% full)

I have seen flash storage go bad, but it was back around 2000-01, I had a 32MB CF card in a PCMCIA adapter that I had to use regularly to move large files or large numbers of files off laptops. (Compaq Armada(s) that were USB 1.1 only.) I suspect that there was little/no wear leveling, and every time a single file got copied, the FAT table was written to, thus exceeding the write life of that block.
 
Samsung's ssd magician allows you to specify how much space to reserve for over provisioning. I've set mine to 10% of my 256gb 830 ssd, ssd life suggests that based on my usage since september 2012 it should last until 2022...

Thats odd. I bought a OCZ vertex 2 60gb more than 2 years ago that I still have now. ) issues that I am aware of. I was under the assumption that super heavy loads and filling it to max capicity would kill it fast(unless defective).
