Hi...i have a 20gig IDE fujitsu in my machine and have just ordered an 80gig Maxtor SATA disk....

I dont really want to have to reinstall my OS and all the other bits and pieces i have, is there any way i can get all the info onto that 80gig drive easily and still have it work as it is currently? Can i take an image of the 20giger using somin like Ghost and then dump that image onto the 80giger? Is there a simpler way of doing this? God, sorry for all the questions....any help is much appreciated....

Regards,

Syphon...

The data is the same, only the interface is different. As long as whatever utility you use can detect both PATA and SATA drives, it should work.

as Cardboard Hammer pointed out
it probably could care less if its PATA, SATA or SCSI*
(*provided there are the drivers needed to access a SCSI level device and that includes IDE RAID arrays, on the boot utility)

"Some" Clone Utilities have issues with various filesystems however, but I doubt your employing anything very exotic ;)
will work just fine with NTFS, FAT16, FAT32
It "probably" just does a sector by sector copy
(though I cant find documentation) in which case it would probably work with any file system

Free Edition
The Free Edition of HDClone is the ideal tool for moving contents of entire harddisk drives onto bigger newer ones. This Edition can be downloaded for free from our homepage and fits easily on a diskette. It ships with its own operating system - Sphere SP - and is therefore not depending on other installed systems.
When buying a new larger disk, HDClone copies the data for you, you only have to add the gained space on the disk via some partitioning tool, and in an instant you have the same environment as before on a larger (and faster) disk

things the freeware version wont do
Move larger to smaller disk
Backup&Restore on same disk
Supports Ultra-DMA (which means it will be slow, working in PIO)

what it will do
Move smaller to larger disk
Support disks up to 128 GB

hrm...apparently the Maxtor util MaxBlast3 will do this for me also...i have the new drives here at work right now, this is a job for this evening so i need to get something sorted...I am thinking about just doing a fresh install...good knows my system needs it so nows the perfect time to do it....next question is can I have 2 SATA drives connected (one with OS and one for storage) AND 2 IDE hard drives connected for backup purposes and what not?
