Hopefully my last request for advice before I pull the trigger on this upgrade deal...
Going from an athon xp 2600+, would I notice much of a speed difference between an A64 2800+ compared to a A64 3000+? I know either of the 64's will be faster than what I have now. Basically, is the 2800+ at least comparable to the 3000+?

Both are socket 754, Newcastle cores (1.8 ghz and 2.0 ghz)
Also, my XP runs @ 2.13 ghz. With the 64's running slower, will that have a negative impact on gaming and general computer use? Or does the 64'bit architecture and on-die mem. controller make up for the slower speeds?

any mobo should fit in any case. you might just have to play with some of the stand offs and rearrange it thats all.

If you mean the case I think you mean, then you shouldn't have any problem. I recently upgraded a seriously old compaq mATX motherboard with an Asus A7N266-VM (claims to be 9.6"x9.6", never really measured it), and it fit just fine.

i dont think you can do that with new compaq/hp stuff. I think they are like dell with their proprietary design crap. Don't quote me on that, but is there anyone that can confirm?

I'll confirm that they have a lot of proprietary crap. There cases might not have the extra standoffs. You could superglue some on though - problem solved.

There's a reason mATX is a standard and that's because it's designed to fit in any mATX/ATX case. That's why it's a standard.

I just ordered a retail A64 2800+ and refurb gigabyte ga-k8vm800m off of newegg. Total came to $167 shipped. Hope newegg's refurbs are worth a shit lol. Hard to argue w/ $44 dollars on that mobo.

Wish me luck.
