I am currently shopping for a laptop and am looking as resolution screen sizes. Most of them i am look at have 1600x1050 as the max, which is fine.

The question I have is if I hook up an external monitor (Which will be a 42" 1080P LCD) will I be able to increase the resolution on the mobile chip or will 1600x1050 be the max regardless of the monitor?

Also while I have the thread started will a 9800m GS be able to run the following games well:

Battlefield II
Warcraft 3 (Not Worried about this one)
Starcraft (Not worried about this one)
World in Conflict
Red Alert 3
Starcraft II (HAHA...I might be looking for my next upgrade by the time this comes out)
Diablo III (We might have landed on Mars before this comes out)

Thanks in advance for the help.

Almost any laptop GPU worth its weight in crap will do 1920x1200 or better (most modern cards top out at 2560x1600) via the VGA out. This is in no way affected by the resolution of the internal screen. HDMI or DVI out would obviously be better, but for whatever reason many laptop manufacturers haven't got with the times yet... and the VGA D-sub connector has been outmoded for a long time.

As for gaming ability...

Starcraft 2 and Diablo 3 aren't going to be very GPU intensive if Blizzard's previous work is any indication, so a 9800m should be more than enough for them.

Red Alert 3 shouldn't be a problem either so long as you have a fairly fast (2+Ghz) C2D or better.

World In Conflict will be playable without too much trouble but you may have to drop some settings and probably won't be able to run any AA.

You might also look at machines with mobile 4850 / 4870s. Should be a good bit faster than the 9800m GS.

I have a 8800M GS in my laptop and I can say using the modded driver inf file to get the latest drivers to install helps a fair bit with performance and it's a pretty decent card.

I don't play any of the games you mentioned, but things like Hellgate:London will play with maxed out DX9 settings. Fallout3 lets me run the settings pretty high as well (Can't remember off hand but I think they were maxed too).

And for comparisons sake, I got 6928 Marks in 3d Mark 06.
