I originally had a thread going in the power supply section. I was having freezing up problems with my homebuilt computer. It turns out the power supply i had was junk anyway it was an ultra LSP550 watt. I replaced the PSU with a corsair at the recomendation of Danny. Which i am totally happy with the corsair is a much better PSU, the wiring is better, etc.

It didnt solve my problem however i should have listened to Danny who right away suggested a memory problem. It turned out one of the memory modules on my OCZ dual channel 4gb kit was bad. In the interim I purchased a Gskill 2gb dual channel kit to have something to use while i am waiting for OCZ to send me back good modules.
the specs on the OCZ memory are:
OCZ Vista Gold Edition Dual Channel 4096MB PC6400 DDR2 800MHz Memory (2 x 2048MB), Model: OCZ2G8004GK, Memory CAS Latency: 5-5-5-18

the memory i ordered and are using now is:
G.SKILL 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model F2-6400CL5D-2GBNQ Capacity 2GB (2 x 1GB)
Speed DDR2 800 (PC2 6400)
Cas Latency 5
Timing 5-5-5-15
Voltage 1.8V - 2.0V
ECC No
Buffered/Registered Unbuffered
Multi-channel Kit Dual Channel Kit.

My question is can i mix these two dual channel kits when i get back the OCZ together with the new GSKILL set up i am using now? The timing in the modules are slightly different the OCZ is 5-5-5-18, the GSKill is 5-5-5-15.
my mother board is a gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3P. It has 4 memory slots thats says it supports 2 dual channels. Channel 0: DDR2_1,DDR2_2 Channel 1: DDR2_3, DDR2_4

Do i have to do specific adjustments in the bios to get them to run and play well together? The only difference i see in the modules are 1 set is: 5-5-5-18, and 1 set is: 5-5-5-15
I don't quite grasp the timing aspect of memory. so forgive me if I sound ignorent on this.

thank you for any help and input or suggestions!

You can either overclock the ocz to 5-5-5-15 or you can underclock the g skill to 5-5-5-18.

Performance wise you won't notice a difference and the ocz shouldn't have any issue going to 5-5-5-15.

So in the bios i guess i have to find the advanced memory settings, right now I'm just using auto standard setting. There will be a place to make timing adjustments on each module, of the motherboard? Or just a basic setting telling it to run all the memory at either 5-5-5-15, or 5-5-5-18.

I am so frustrated on this i cant believe it. Got the supposedly new memory back, put them into the open other channel. Froze up. Took out the Gskill from its channel and put in the new OCZ into it and computer froze up. Put Gskill back into its channel computer runs fine...Is it posiible they sent me back the same bad memory?. This same exact memory ran fine for 7 months. Now it wont run at all by itself or with the 5-5-5-15. Funny thing is when i put it in by itself it came up as 5-5-5-18 with no adjustment needed in Bios. When Gskill is in it comes up as 5-5-5-15. When both were in they came up as 5-5-5-18 so that was the slower timing. But what would explain the OCZ not working by itself, I even have it set to standard, no turbo, no extreme. So i made no overclocking to it.

Am I missing something here, or is this another set of bad modules?I put a very tiny black mark on the label of the heatshield to make sure they sent me different module back on the bad one, is it possible they stooped so low as to just swap out the heatshield. Lets put it this way the conversation on the RMA ticket didnt go so smoothly. Like i said there were redundant questions and rediculous shipping rules for them to accept them back in the first place.

What would you next move be?

Test the Gskill both channels and reset your BIOS.
And if those things don't work that sorry but i think you got another bad set.

go in and manually enter all the timing and voltage settings for the RAM in BIOS. sometimes motherboards set to "auto" get it wrong.

I didnt for get about any of the suggestions to try.I'm in the middle of a move in apartments right as we speak and cant afford to lose the use of my computer. When get all my address changes and pertinent information settled down, I will try the suggestions.

Thanks for all the help.
