Question about mixing brands

Hi, I just had two questions I hope someone could answer for me. I currently have 2GB (2 x 1) G.Skill DDR2-800 (F2-6400PHU2) @ 3-3-3-6 with a 1:1 divider at 710Mhz and I had planned on going 4GB and just recenitly found a good deal for 2GB of OCZ Platinum Edition Rev. 2 and decided to order it. Thing is, is I was wondering if it was ok to go dual with both of these sets and if they would work together ok? I plan on trying to see if they'll both stay at 3-3-3-6 timings at 2.2v like I have the G.Skill at right now, if not i'll ease up the timings. Would I lose performance by mixing OCZ and G.Skill together? My motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3R. And my second question, is running at lower latencies better then running at higher speeds? As i'm not sure if i'm holding my memory back by running at just 710Mhz with 3-3-3-6 timings then running them at something like 4-4-4-12 1100MHz or so. Thanks!

Allright, one at a time:

1. Who knows if they work together. Try it out. usually, mixing memory brands is not a good idea. Make sure you have the g.skill in one colored mem slots and the OCZ in a different color. Try using the opposite slots if they won't boot together. Sometimes that's all it takes to makes them work together (don't ask me why....i don't get it either).

2. Before you even attempt to boot with those 4 installed, go into the Bios and use "safe" timings, e.g. 4-4-4-15 to make sure they even boot together.

3. Most likely they won't run on 3-3-3-6 together

4. Higher FSB speed is always worth more than tighter timings on intel chipsets.

5. chose a safe Voltage for them. I'm not sure what Voltage the g.Skills are rated for, but try booting at 1.9V or 2.0V first. That should be safe for the OCZ. If the g.skill need more Voltage to boot, bump it up to 2.1V or 2.2V if necessary, but i wouldn't run them that high only to achieve better timings.

However, i think you're overestimating the memory. They are rated 4-4-4-15 @ DDR2-800. I don't think you can achieve 4-4-4-12 at DDR2-1066 with these, especially not when mixing memory brands.

I think your best bet will be something around 400mhz (DDR2-800) at 4-4-4-15 with all 4 dimms installed. I run my 4x1gb OCZ PC2-800 at DDR2-900 speeds at 4-5-5-15 at 2.0V. You're mixing chips, so it's unlikely that you can overclock like hell with tight timings on top. If you can, then you got really lucky.
