Question about minidv cam and firewire input.

I have a sony dcr-trv22 digital video camera. It has the ability to plug in an analog device such as a vcr or anything else with rca jacks for that matter and send the video digitally through firewire or even usb.

My question is, does anyone know of software that will just let you view the video stream coming from the camera at full speed and in full screen if possible through firewire? I'm pretty sure it will work through usb, but obviously, the video won't look as good. The reason it will work through usb, is because windows sees it as a video device such as a webcam and i can see it with any software that will display a webcam input.

The reason I want to be able to just view the input as opposed to capturing it is because I don't have a videa capture card and the camera seems to do everything a video capture card would do except for let me view the video in full speed and full screen straight from the camera.

I can see the preview image with any video capturing software just fine, but it is too small for just viewing purposes. I would like to be able to see this input in a window of it's own and be able to make it full screen similar to the software that comes with any video capture card.

Do you think it might work with software such as that? I'm not very familiar with how windows looks at firewire devices. If windows sees it as a video input device in a similar way through firewire as it does through usb, i may be able to get something to work.
 
Why did you buy the 22? For the digi to analog conversion deal? I am just curious, as I just purchased the 19. I did not need the conversion, color view, or the still camera abilities, and the video quality is the exact same.

in short, no. usb webcams use a different protocol than dv cams over firewire.

however, orange micro makes a program called webcamdv that will emulate the usb protocol over firewire. essentially, when the camera is connected to the computer over firewire, this program makes windows think that it is a usb webcam. so it shows up in any software designed to work with webcams [chat programs, capture programs, etc...]

That, and I thought that having the memory stick would be a nice extra feature. I don't think that I'll ever really use it now that have tried it out, but the price wasn't too much more. The color viewfinder is nice too.

If I had it to do over again, I would probably consider the 19 more, but I made the decision in a hurry and didn't want to skimp(sp?) too much.

Well, apart from costing as much as a cheap capture card off ebay, it is still pretty choppy in full screen and laggy, so it wouldn't work for what I wanted to use it for.

It just seems that there would be some kind of software out there that could view the dv input as it comes in. Obviously that data is being transfered fast enough because it captures just fine. Also, if I'm correct, the interface replaces the analog connections in newer vcrs. In that case, you could view the image on a television in real time through the ilink connection.
 
the only other thing i can think of off hand would be one of the many video editors.

my camera came with ulead videostudio 6 and you can watch video from the camera [looks pretty good on my comp...not choppy or laggy], but if it goes full screen i don't know how to do it.

Yeah, windows movie maker and premier both have decent previewers, but not fullscreenable that I know of.
