Question about MB mounting in case

I just received my MB today. The case i bought didn't come with any washers for the standoff screws. The MB didn't come with any either.

I read somewhere that you have to put felt washers between the screw heads and the MB. Is this true or a myth. I don't want to take the MB out of the bag until I know I'm ready to mount it..

thanks for any advice to a n00be :)

You generally don't need them, they are there to help prevent shorting any traces running near the mounting holes but that's not usually a problem for most boards.

OK,

Thanks for that info. And thanks for the timely response. I guess by my question you can tell this is my first build. :)

If you notice a problem, a small piece of masking tape will work just fine.

Generally, you put a standoff on the MB, then mount the MB to the standoff via a small screw.

The MB has a nonconductive material around the hole as well......so washers are not needed.

Actually, the motherboard has conductive rings around it so it can ground itself through the standoffs. In practice, they are not particularly necessary, but there's no use in using washers to isolate the motherboard from the standoffs.

It can actually be a bad thing to apply washers when not required. The board grounds through the standoffs and I used to know a guy who built computers and put washers on every single mounting point on the wrong side of the board.

He always wondered why the computers he built would shock people through the case.

I think he means electrical tape.

masking tape will work just fine, as far as I know, it's non-conductive.....if you need such.

My mistake..........brain freeze.............

I noticed the conductive rings around the screw holes of the MB. It looked like it was designed to ground the board to the standoffs and the case.

I'm gonna go without the washers. My cpu arrived today, now I'm just waiting on the memory to get here. It's the holidays, I made 2 different orders, things are coming in dribs and drabs.... Can't wait to put all this together..
